The tradition of the first pitch at a baseball game is one of the coolest ways to bring celebrities and athletes from outside the sport into the spotlight. The crowd loves it, and anyone chosen to take part definitely doesn’t want to mess it up, especially if they’re an athlete whose job also involves throwing a ball.
During the Monday, May 26, matchup between the Milwaukee Brewers and Boston Red Sox, Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love was invited to throw out the ceremonial first pitch. But the result wasn’t quite as smooth as one might expect from someone who throws for a living.

Jordan Love Explains Terrible First Pitch at Brewers Game
Monday couldn’t have gone better for Brewers fans. The team won the first of a three-game home series against the Red Sox by a score of 3-2, and went on to sweep all three matchups, continuing their push to improve their season record.
Packers quarterback Jordan Love was the special guest chosen to throw out the first pitch. He showed support for Milwaukee’s team throughout the game, but when it came time to take the mound, things didn’t go quite as expected. Instead of delivering a fast, crisp throw, something fans might expect from a quarterback, the pitch floated in like a lob, far from the typical baseball style.
Asked about the moment, Love admitted it was his own mistake, explaining that he instinctively tried to throw the pitch like a football, which threw off his mechanics.

“My first pitch, it made it there, it was a little bit of a lob pass, I threw it like football, but it was awesome being down there,” Love said. “Definitely need to get some more experience on the baseball, get a little warm up next time, that’ll be good, but next pitch will be better.”
The connection between quarterbacks and baseball is well known. Players like Patrick Mahomes and Kyler Murray have backgrounds in the sport, and you can still see traces of that experience in their NFL throwing mechanics. The different arm angles and release styles they use are often rooted in baseball fundamentals, and when blended with traditional football mechanics, they create more dynamic and unconventional throws.
Though Love doesn’t share that same baseball background, fans didn’t hold back on social media, and even members of the media had their fun, poking at the quarterback for the underwhelming pitch. For his next first pitch appearance, he might want to take a few tips from Mahomes or Murray to put on a more respectable showing and save himself from the embarrassment.
