Jon Robinson Fired: What We Know About the Tennessee Titans’ GM Situation

The Tennessee Titans have fired general manager Jon Robinson. Vice President of Player Personnel Ryan Cowden will serve as GM for the rest of the season.

It’s uncommon for a team to fire a general manager midway through the season. It’s even less common for a general manager of a first-place team to get canned — period.

The Tennessee Titans did both Tuesday, parting ways with Jon Robinson six years into his tenure as team GM. Titans Vice President of Player Personnel Ryan Cowden will assume responsibility on an interim basis.

Titans owner Amy Adams Strunk informed Jon Robinson Tuesday that he’s out, the team.

Strunk said the following in a statement:

“Since becoming controlling owner in 2015, my goal has been to raise the standard for what is expected in all facets of our organization. I believe we have made significant progress both on and off the field through investments in leadership, personnel and new ideas. This progress includes the core of our business, the football team itself, which is regularly evaluated both by results (wins and losses) and team construction/roster building. I am proud of what we have accomplished in my eight seasons of ownership, but I believe there is more to be done and higher aspirations to be met.

“I want to thank Jon for his dedicated work to set this organization on an upward trajectory and I wish him and his family the best.”

A full search for Robinson’s replacement will occur at season’s end. The Titans (7-5) are overwhelming favorites to win the AFC South but based on how the season has gone, look quite likely to go one-and-done in the postseason yet again. They have just one win against teams with winning records.

Robinson, 46, is out just two days after the star player he traded away — wide receiver A.J. Browntorched the Titans’ secondary for 119 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-10 Eagles blowout victory.

The decision to let Brown go didn’t sit particularly well with head coach Mike Vrabel, and it turns out he was right. The Titans are 23rd in yards per play (5.2) and 26th in scoring (18.3) this year.

They have lost three of their last five games and are only in prime position to make the postseason because the rest of the division stinks. The Titans have made the playoffs in each of the last three seasons but did lose home games in 2020 and 2021.

NFL Media reported that the Titans were displeased enough with the direction of their roster that they were willing to eat the remaining four years of Robinson’s contract.
