‘This Is a WILD Take’ – J.J. Watt Defends Russell Wilson and Steelers After NFL Analyst’s Comments on AFC North Leader

    Published on

J.J. Watt delivered a takedown of Dan Orlovsky for his comments on Steelers QB Russell Wilson and Pittsburgh's tactics.

Russell Wilson is 4-0 in his career with the Pittsburgh Steelers. As their winning chariot marches on, they have a few naysayers as well. Chief among them is former NFL quarterback turned analyst Dan Orlovsky. However, he was brutally taken down by former Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt.

J.J. Watt Trolls Dan Orlovsky for His Analysis of Russell Wilson and the Steelers

“Statistically, Russell’s the worst red-zone quarterback in the NFL right now. That’s not an opinion, its statistics,” said Orlovsky in the latest edition of ESPN’s Get Up. He also trashed the Steelers’ tactic of relying on field goals.

“You’re not going to beat Lamar (Jackson), Josh Allen, or Patrick Mahomes kicking field goals,” he added. One of the Steelers’ fan pages on X (previously Twitter) uploaded this clip and Watt tore apart the entire concept laid down by Orlovsky.

“Take the teams, names, etc out of it… ‘You’re not gonna beat Team A by kicking only field goals’ is a WILD take to make four days after LITERALLY beating Team A with only field goals. That’s like the sports media equivalent of a QB running out the back of their own end zone,” he tweeted.

Watt was referring to the Steelers’ 18-16 win over the Baltimore Ravens in Week 11. The Ravens scored two touchdowns and a field goal, while the Steelers won by scoring six Chris Boswell field goals.

Wilson Has No Lack of Supporters as the Steelers Keep Winning

In his four games, Wilson has thrown for 942 yards for six touchdowns. As such, former NFL QB Chase Daniel batted for Wilson during his appearance on FS1’s The Facility.

“If Russell Wilson keeps playing the way he’s playing, the price is only going to go up,” Daniel said. “So, in my opinion, if you’re starting 4-0 with Russ, he’s proven to you that he’s the next quarterback of the Pittsburgh Steelers for a few years to come because he keeps his body in good shape.”

Looking at Pro Football Network’s proprietary Quarterback+ rankings, Wilson has had an interesting, if not inconsistent, season. As of right now, Wilson ranks 13th in the league in our rankings. However, those numbers are a bit skewed because of the 100-pass minimum that is required to qualify.

“Russell Wilson is the poster child for why we set a 100-pass attempt minimum for these rankings. A week ago, he would have ranked inside the top five in these rankings, but his fourth start saw him plummet down the rankings after he ranked 26th on the week.

Wilson has been good when able to operate from a clean pocket this season, ranking eighth, but ranks 28th when he has to make plays under pressure. Prior to this week, choosing Wilson as the starter over Fields looked like a wise decision, but that is less decisive after the game against the Baltimore Ravens”

Interestingly enough, Justin Fields is actually 14th in the rankings, just one spot behind Wilson. However, looking at Wilson on a game-by-game basis, points to exactly why he is now the starter.
