Garrett Wilson will be reunited with his college quarterback, Justin Fields, after the latter joined the New York Jets on a two-year, $40 million contract with $30 million in guarantees. The former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback will be on his third NFL team in his fifth season after spending the first three years of his career with the Chicago Bears before being traded to the Pittsburgh Steelers for a sixth-round pick ahead of last season.
Fields showed some promise in six starts in 2024, throwing for 1,106 yards, five touchdowns and one interception. He completed 65.8% of his pass attempts while adding 289 rushing yards and five touchdowns on 62 carries, leading the Steelers to a 4-2 record.
It was the best he has looked in the NFL after early career struggles with the Bears, leading the Jets to give him a deal. Wilson recently praised his new teammate while placing the blame on his struggles with his teammates in Chicago.
Garrett Wilson Praises Justin Fields After Pair Reunite With Jets
Wilson shared high praise for Fields while speaking with the media on Wednesday. He took aim at the quarterback’s former Bears wide receivers while sharing a prediction for how he will perform in a Jets uniform. The Athletic’s Zack Rosenblatt posted:
“Garrett Wilson said he’d watch Justin Fields film when he was with the Bears thinking ‘I would’ve caught that.’ Said he thinks Fields is much better than people realize — and has felt that way since he was drafted, when he thought Fields should’ve went higher than he did. ‘I know exactly what he can do. Now the world’s gotta see it.'”

Wilson spent two years catching passes from Fields with the Buckeyes. The quarterback finished third and seventh in Heisman Trophy voting, respectively. Meanwhile, the wide receiver appeared in 22 games over that span, recording 1,155 receiving yards and 11 touchdowns on 73 receptions.
Fields was selected 11th overall in the 2021 NFL Draft, while Wilson was selected 10th overall the following year. The latter has thrived in his three-year career with the Jets despite lacking stability under center. While he has had six different starting quarterbacks, he has crossed the 1,000-yard threshold in each season of his career.
All in all, the 2022 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year has recorded 3,249 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns on 279 receptions. While New York will once again have a new starting quarterback in 2025, Wilson and Fields have chemistry with one another from their college days. The Jets have not made the postseason since 2010.
