With flag football officially being added to the lineup for the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, there has been a great divide over whether NFL players, who are allowed to participate, should play, or if it should be primarily comprised of the United States men’s national flag football team.
Well, former Philadelphia Eagles center and now television analyst Jason Kelce provided a unique perspective on how the 2028 Olympics roster should be determined.
Jason Kelce Lays Out Incredible 2028 Olympic Team Selection Idea
On the latest episode of the “New Heights” podcast, which Kelce hosts alongside his brother and Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, he suggested that an NFL roster of players should play against the USA flag football team to determine the roster.
“I think a coach that is familiar with flag football should select an NFL-represented team. That team should just play this flag football team that’s been playing for a long time and feels like they are the best at it and don’t need other guys.”
From there, the winner would be the Olympic team.
If this were to happen, it would be quite a compelling WWE-like arrangement. The stakes would be extremely high.
To most, the NFL team would be viewed as the “Goliath,” and the USA flag football team would be the “David” in this fictitious matchup.
Team USA QB Darrell Doucette Speaks Out
One of the leading individuals against the idea of the NFL players coming in right away and taking over is Team USA quarterback Darrell “Housh” Doucette.
In a recent interview with The Washington Post, Doucette discussed the narrative of NFL players potentially taking over the team for the 2028 Olympics.
Doucette is 35 years old. He’s 5-foot-7 and 140 pounds. He’s never played tackle football, but is arguably the best flag football player in the world.
“This is a sport that we’ve played for a long time, and we feel like we are the best at it, and we don’t need other guys,” Doucette said. “But we all have one goal in mind, and that’s to represent our country. We’re definitely open to all competition. If those guys come in and ball out and they’re better than us, hats off to them. Go win that gold medal for our country.”
Of course, this comes after some jaw-dropping comments Doucette made when he told TMZ, “At the end of the day, I feel like I’m better than Patrick Mahomes because of my IQ of the game.”
Leading up to the 2028 Olympics, this issue is likely to remain a hot-button topic. We’ll see what happens.
