Jaguars vs. Titans Prediction
The Jaguars seemed like they were close to getting into the AFC playoff conversation after a strong victory over the Baltimore Ravens in Week 12. However, they fell flat last week against a Detroit Lions offense that’s been impressive as of late, and now sit at 4-8 on the season.
Trevor Lawrence has taken impressive steps forward in his development this year, but it wasn’t able to come together in Week 13 against the Lions. Lawrence threw for just 179 passing yards and one touchdown after throwing for 321 yards and three touchdowns the week prior.
Lawrence will have a chance to bounce back this week against a Titans pass defense that’s currently allowing the second-most passing yards per game and the fourth-most passing touchdowns on average.
If the Jaguars are still aiming to make a play for the division and keep their slim playoff hopes alive, Lawrence needs to take advantage of that matchup in a must-win game.
The key for Jacksonville to win this matchup certainly does rest on the passing game, but the run defense needs to turn things around and show up with the tough task of slowing down Tennessee’s run game.
Over the last three weeks, Jacksonville’s allowing the eighth-most rushing yards per game, and Tennessee’s going to do everything they can to get Derrick Henry rolling in this one. If they can improve and work to bottle him up as best as they can, the Jaguars could escape with a victory.
On the other side of the ball, the Titans still hold first place in the underwhelming AFC South. But they’ve now lost two straight games against two very good opponents in Cincinnati and Philadelphia.
This is a crucial game for Tennessee to retain a firm grip on the division, and they’ll have every opportunity to walk away with a win due to the matchups.
Jacksonville is currently allowing the fourth-most passing yards this season. While Tennessee doesn’t traditionally rely on their passing game to win games, Ryan Tannehill should have enough room to spread the ball around and pick apart this defense.
As for the Titans’ running game, they should find success against a Jaguars defense that Henry has traditionally eviscerated. His last outing against this divisional opponent was Week 5 of the 2021 season, where he ran for 130 yards on 29 rush attempts and three touchdowns.
The Jaguars’ defense is towards the bottom of the league in recent weeks in regards to slowing down opposing run games, which means that Henry should be in line for a major workload and major production this week. The key for Tennessee to win this matchup, though, falls on the defensive side of the ball.
As mentioned above, Tennessee is allowing the second-most passing yards. While they’re a much better unit when it comes to slowing down opposing run games, the pass defense will need to show back up this week in order for the Titans to control the game.
If Tennessee’s secondary can keep Lawrence in check this week, we should see the Titans move into a situation where they lock up a playoff spot due to the status of the rest of their division.
