As training camp draws near, one of the main questions surrounding the Jacksonville Jaguars is not quarterback competitions or free agency acquisitions, but rather what rookie Travis Hunter will do in his NFL debut. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner was the No. 2 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and expectations are sky-high. Jaguars executive Tony Khan isn’t shying away from the spotlight.

Jacksonville Jaguars Plan Two-Way Role for Travis Hunter Under HC Liam Coen
“I think he’s been super open about it, and Liam plans to involve Travis on offense and defense,” Khan said, talking about new head coach Liam Coen. “In our offseason activities, already early in minicamp, we’ve seen Travis work on both sides. He’s been very impressive on both sides.”
We’ve been speculating since the #NFLDraft how Jacksonville is going to use Travis Hunter and how much he’ll play on either side of the ball…

That may sound ambitious, and for good reason. Although playing offense and defense in the NFL is uncommon, Hunter isn’t your typical rookie. His final collegiate season was legendary with 96 receptions, 1,258 yards, 15 touchdowns, numerous interceptions, a forced fumble, and almost 1,400 total snaps.
He won the Biletnikoff Award for best receiver, the Heisman Award, and the Bednarik Award for outstanding defensive player. It was a historic year, not just a nice one.
Hunter arrives in Jacksonville not just as a top draft pick, but as a potential game-changer in a way the NFL hasn’t seen in years. And the Jaguars are ready to embrace it.
It’s very early, but he’s got a great group of coaches to work with on both sides of the ball,” Khan said. “We’re really excited about it. Liam talked about it a good amount, that he believes that Travis can contribute on offense and defense.”
Jaguars Embrace Hunter’s Rare Two-Way Potential To Ignite AFC Breakthrough
Naturally, it won’t be simple. It will be challenging to handle the physical demands of playing both sides of the ball at the best level. Hunter, however, has already demonstrated that he is wired differently and thrives on taking on challenges that most would not dare attempt.
Hunter might be the spark the Jaguars team has been waiting for if they want to impact the AFC significantly. Not only is it thrilling to think that he could break up a third-down throw one series and then catch a touchdown the next, but it is also possible.
Although there is still much to learn, one thing is sure: Jacksonville is not restricting Hunter. They’re allowing him to be himself, a unique, unafraid talent poised to make waves. And that may have been the best course of action.
