Is Zay Jones the Missing Piece for the Cowboys’ Offense? Veteran WR Reportedly Visiting Dallas

The Dallas Cowboys remain a bit thin at wide receiver after Michael Gallup's departure. Could free agent WR Zay Jones be the missing piece?

The Dallas Cowboys remain a bit thin at wide receiver after Michael Gallup left in free agency to sign with the Las Vegas Raiders. A recent report indicates that Dallas might target free agent wide receiver Zay Jones to fill the position of need.

Free Agent WR Zay Jones Reportedly Visiting Cowboys

As the Cowboys look to fill their need at WR, Jones is reportedly in Dallas for a visit on Wednesday, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz.

Schultz reported that the free agent wide receiver has already met with the Tennessee Titans and Arizona Cardinals as well, which could give the Cowboys some competition in pursuit of Jones.

Adding Jones to the fold as a potential third starter could certainly make some sense. The veteran began his NFL career in 2017 with the Buffalo Bills and has put together some productive seasons over the course of his career.

Jones posted career highs of 82 catches for 823 yards alongside five touchdowns with the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2022, then notched 34 catches for 321 yards and two scores across nine appearances in an injury-riddled 2023 campaign.

Still, Jones has put together some highlight-reel moments over the course of his NFL career.

Strong ties to Texas — and Dallas in particular — could also be attractive to Jones in a potential return to the city. He was born in Dallas and went to high school within the state at Austin High School, which he graduated from in 2013.

Zay’s father, Robert Jones, also spent the first four years of his NFL career with the Cowboys from 1992-95 after being selected by Dallas with the 24th overall pick in the 1992 NFL Draft. Robert was part of three Super Bowl-winning teams with the Cowboys across his time with the franchise in what would become a 10-year NFL career.

Zay could look to continue his father’s legacy in returning to Dallas.

Cowboys’ Wide Receiver Depth Chart

Dallas could certainly use some bolstering at the WR position in the wake of Gallup’s departure.

The good news for the Cowboys, though, is that they do bring back each of their top two wide receivers from a season ago in CeeDee Lamb and Brandin Cooks. Lamb led the way in the room with the most productive season of his career, while Cooks added strong secondary production alongside tight end Jake Ferguson.

However, Gallup was the clear third-most productive option within the room, tallying 34 receptions for 418 yards and two scores.

Beyond him, Jalen Tolbert and KaVontae Turpin were the only other receivers to see a significant amount of catches on the season. Tolbert could be in line to take on a larger role in 2024, while Turpin was primarily a strong special-teams option.

Proven production is even more sparse beyond those players, though 2024 sixth-round pick Ryan Flournoy could look to factor into the mix.

Dallas also released wide receiver Martavis Bryant on Wednesday, per multiple reports, which could further enable the franchise to add Jones to the room. Bryant hasn’t played in an NFL game since 2018 after a lengthy substance abuse suspension but is reportedly expected to have other teams interested in his services.

Everything could be lining up for Jones to help fill the Cowboys’ wide receiver void.
