Los Angeles Chargers running back Omarion Hampton started the game slowly against the Washington Commanders in Week 5. In the first half, Hampton had 10 carries for 37 yards, averaging 3.7 yards per carry.
Hampton suffered a setback late in the game, and here’s the latest news about his status.
What Happened to Omarion Hampton?
The Chargers tried to use their running backs effectively against the Commanders’ defense, but Hampton was held in check. The running back suffered an ankle injury in the second half of the game and didn’t return.
There weren’t any reports about Hampton’s injury coming into the game, but in the third quarter, he had to check into the medical tent and then later went to the locker room.

Before exiting the game, Hampton had 12 carries for 44 yards and six receptions for 26 yards as the Chargers trailed 20-10. After the game, Hampton was seen “with a walking boot on his left ankle,” as per Daniel Popper.
On the Chargers’ depth chart, Hampton is RB1 while Hassan Haskins and Kimani Vidal are Nos. 2 and 3 for Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh if Hampton misses time. Getting a back like Hampton fits right into the style of play the Chargers HC wanted to bring into his role with Los Angeles.
Hampton was a first-round draft choice (No. 22 overall) by the Chargers out of North Carolina. In 38 games for the Tar Heels, Hampton had 622 carries for 3,565 yards and 36 touchdowns. Hampton averaged 93.8 yards per game rushing in college. As for receiving yards, Hampton had 73 catches for 635 yards and four receiving touchdowns.
Last week, in a 21-18 loss to the New York Giants at MetLife Stadium, Hampton rushed for 128 yards on 12 attempts and scored one touchdown. His longest run from scrimmage against the Giants was a 54-yarder. Additionally, Hampton caught five passes for 37 yards, with a 19-yard reception being the longest last week.
