There were high expectations for rookie wide receiver Emeka Egbuka when he was drafted with the 19th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. However, injuries to teammates Mike Evans and Chris Godwin thrust Egbuka into the WR1 role.
He’s dazzled, dropping jaws as a rookie; however, the incredible first-year wideout has gotten off to a slow start against the Buffalo Bills during the Buccaneers’ Week 11 matchup.

What Happened to Tampa Bay Buccaneers WR Emeka Egbuka?
No, Egbuka is not hurt; in fact, the rookie has been one of the most essential pieces of Tampa Bay’s offense this season. Through nine games, the former Ohio State Buckeye has caught 40 passes for 677 yards and six touchdowns. However, his dominating presence has not been felt as strongly in the first half of the Buccaneers’ Week 11 game.
While quarterback Baker Mayfield got Egbuka involved in the Buccaneers offense early, the rookie wideout only caught three passes for 24 yards in the first half. Thankfully, veteran Sterling Shepard has stepped in to keep the offense afloat.

Despite a 6-3 start to the season, Tampa’s offense has struggled, as it is missing several key pieces. Evans and Godwin remain out as the Buccaneers also await the return of running back Bucky Irving. As a result, Tampa Bay ranks relatively low in PFSN’s Offensive Impact rating, with a score of 72.5, placing it 21st overall behind teams such as the Miami Dolphins and Baltimore Ravens.
However, Egbuka certainly isn’t the reason for the low score, as the rookie has a WR Impact score of 80, ranking him 20th among wide receivers in the NFL. While getting some bodies back from injury would go a long way, seeing the rookie ranked so high is very impressive.
It seems like the Buccaneers made some halftime adjustments as Mayfield found Egbuka for an eight-yard completion on Tampa Bay’s first offensive drive of the second half as they drove down the field for a Sean Tucker touchdown. However, with the Buccaneers coming back from a first-half deficit, it’s going to take more plays to keep up with an equally productive Bills offense.
The shoes Egbuka has been asked to fill are huge, and he’s taken the challenge in stride. While there’s bound to be some rough outings, a slow start is not an indictment on a rookie that’s shown us some incredible outings so far in 2025.
