Have the Cleveland Browns Ever Won the Super Bowl?

The Cleveland Browns have a proud history with loyal fans who have been there every step of the way. But have they ever won a Super Bowl?

    Published on

The 2023 NFL regular season is officially behind us. The 18-week marathon has come and gone with 18 teams now headed for a long offseason as they look to come back better next season. However, for 14 teams, the dream of a Super Bowl title is still very much alive.

One of those teams is the Cleveland Browns, who — despite a season’s worth of adversity — still found a way to make it to the playoffs. The Browns are one of the scariest teams going into it, too, given their recent hot streak. The ultimate prize is to hoist the Lombardi Trophy, and Cleveland has a chance to do that this year.

But have they ever won a Super Bowl?

The Cleveland Browns’ Super Bowl Drought

Despite being a franchise with a long NFL history, that history has not necessarily been filled with winning. In fact, Cleveland has not won a title in the current Super Bowl era.

One would need to go back to before the AFL-NFL merger in 1970 to discuss the titles they have won as a franchise. Before 1970, the Browns won four titles, starting in 1950 and followed by 1954, 1955, and once more in 1964. Since then, the team has not been able to win a championship or find any real sustained success either.

    The Browns Are Not Alone

While the Cleveland faithful are starved for their first Lombardi Trophy, they’re not alone in that hunger.

In addition to the Browns, 11 other NFL franchises have never won a title either. Some have been around longer than others, but either way, there are a dozen NFL organizations who are on the hunt for their first taste of championship success.

The 11 other franchises still looking for their first Super Bowl title are the Arizona Cardinals, Atlanta Falcons, Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, Houston Texans, Jacksonville Jaguars, Los Angeles Chargers, Minnesota Vikings, and Tennessee Titans.

Buffalo, Detroit, and Houston will join Cleveland in the playoffs this year.

Of the 12 teams who haven’t won a Super Bowl, eight of them have appeared in the big game but were unsuccessful in bringing home a title. Those teams were the Bills and Vikings — who made it four times a piece — the Bengals with three, the Falcons and the Panthers twice, and the Cardinals, Chargers, and Titans, who have all been once.

The Browns are hoping that this is the year that they can remove themselves from this dreaded list. With the talented defense and veteran QB Joe Flacco, Cleveland may have the team to do it.
