George Paton hired as new GM of the Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos agreed to a six-year contract with Vikings assistant GM George Paton, who will replace John Elway as the GM in Denver.

On Tuesday, PFN Insider Benjamin Allbright reported that George Paton was the favorite to land the Denver Broncos general manager job. And on Wednesday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that George Paton and the Denver Broncos are finalizing terms on a six-year contract to take over as GM. Paton will join the Broncos from the Minnesota Vikings, where he served as their Assistant GM.

Allbright revealed George Paton was the favorite for the Broncos job on Tuesday

On Tuesday night’s edition of PFN Quick Slants, PFN Insider Benjamin Allbright reported that he was hearing George Paton was the heavy favorite for the Broncos GM job.

“The Broncos have narrowed their GM search to three names…George Paton, who I would suggest would be the frontrunner, Terry Fontenot, and then Champ Kelly of the Chicago Bears…There are still things in the works here, but I would suggest that George Paton had a great interview, is kind of the favorite candidate, and has the Gary Kubiak seal of endorsement, which carries a lot of weight around here in Denver.”

Allbright also said that there is a scenario where the Broncos could actually land both Paton and Kelly if everything broke right.

“There’s a scenario here where George Paton comes in and takes the General Manager’s job, and then Champ Kelly comes in and takes Matt Russell’s (recently retired) job as the Director of Player Personnel.”

It is yet to be determined whether Kelly – who currently serves as the assistant director of player personnel in Chicago – will join Paton in Denver. Therefore, a move to Denver would be a step up in responsibility for him, making it possible the Broncos could still have both candidates.

George Paton was with the Vikings for 14 years before joining the Broncos

The 2020 season was Paton’s 14th year with the Minnesota Vikings. He worked alongside Vikings’ general manager Rick Spielman. Spielman and Paton had worked together in both Chicago and Miami prior to Minnesota.

Paton has previously turned down an offer from Cleveland to be their general manager. Additionally, he has bowed out of the running for other general manager roles.

However, there is a family connection for George Paton in Denver. His nephew, Rob Paton is a scout in the Broncos organization. And as stated above, he has the seal of approval from Gary Kubiak, who is well revered in Denver.

Paton’s background is in pro scouting

While in Minnesota, George Paton has mainly dealt with the pro scouting side of the organization. One such example was Paton leading the way for the Vikings to sign Linval Joseph. Paton’s accomplishments are generally not well recognized. He has been happy to stay out of the spotlight and in a role he felt comfortable in with Minnesota. However, the Vikings have come under criticism for their handling of the Kirk Cousins contract in recent years.

While Paton’s focus with Minnesota was on the pro side of the organization, he did have input when it came to the draft. The Vikings have had success finding value in the back half of their draft classes. There have been criticisms around their first-round picks. However, the success of Justin Jefferson in 2020 will have silenced some of the critics.
