The Arizona Cardinals travel to Tampa Bay for their Week 13 road matchup against the Buccaneers after dropping three straight. Marvin Harrison Jr. has been absent from the lineup following emergency appendix surgery. How much longer will fantasy football managers be without their star wideout?

Marvin Harrison Jr. Injury Update
Harrison underwent an emergency appendectomy following Arizona’s Week 10 defeat to Seattle. The sudden nature of the medical issue caught everyone off guard, as there were no preceding indications Harrison was dealing with any health concerns. The procedure forced him out of the Cardinals’ Week 11 contest against San Francisco immediately.
Appendicitis surgery typically necessitates a recovery period ranging from two to four weeks, depending on the type of procedure performed and how quickly an individual heals. Arizona has taken a cautious approach with their young star, prioritizing long-term health over rushing him back prematurely.
Harrison was ruled out again for Week 12 against Jacksonville. Head coach Jonathan Gannon offered minimal details about Harrison’s status on Monday, simply stating that when Harrison is physically and mentally ready to play, he will take the field. This vague assessment left fantasy managers uncertain about the timeline for his return.
However, Harrison returned to practice on Wednesday. This represented a significant step forward in his recovery process. While his return to practice did not guarantee he would suit up Sunday, it certainly put him on track to potentially play against Tampa Bay.
Harrison remained limited at practice on Thursday. The consecutive days of limited participation suggest the Cardinals are carefully managing his workload as he works his way back from surgery. Hopefully, he is able to get in a full practice on Friday, which would significantly boost confidence in his availability for Sunday’s game.
Given that this is not an injury but rather recovery from surgery, it is hard to gauge what his limited participation means. Unlike a traditional injury where limited practice indicates a player is working through soreness or testing mobility, appendectomy recovery involves different considerations around conditioning and physical exertion tolerance.
It feels like Harrison is either ready to play or he is not. There is no in-between with this type of situation. Either he has recovered sufficiently from the surgery to handle the rigors of an NFL game, or he needs additional time. We will have to see how the Cardinals designate him on the final injury report Friday afternoon.
Harrison’s Fantasy Outlook
During Harrison’s absence, Michael Wilson has ascended into the WR1 role and has been better than Harrison at any point in his two years in the NFL. Wilson has more fantasy points in his last two games than he had in his first nine combined.
The numbers are staggering. Wilson posted back-to-back games of at least 10 receptions and over 100 receiving yards. Against the 49ers in Week 11, he hauled in 15 catches on 18 targets for 185 yards. Last week against Jacksonville, he recorded 10 receptions on 15 targets for 118 yards in the overtime loss. He’s seen 33 targets over that two-game span.

Even when Harrison returns, it’s impossible for the Cardinals to ignore what Wilson is accomplishing. He will maintain a strong role in the offense moving forward. But for right now, Wilson has to be viewed as a weekly WR1.
Trey McBride continues serving as the top pass-catching option for quarterback Jacoby Brissett. McBride has been Arizona’s most consistent receiving threat this season and will continue seeing heavy volume regardless of Harrison’s status.
Fantasy managers who drafted Harrison will need to continue finding alternative options for the foreseeable future. A Week 14 return against the Rams might represent the earliest realistic target, though the recovery timeline from appendicitis surgery varies by individual.
