Week 16 Early Waiver Wire: Best pickups and targets for fantasy football include Duke Johnson, Samaje Perine, and Amon-Ra St. Brown

After an exciting Week 15, who are the top waiver wire pickups and targets ahead of Week 16 of the 2021 fantasy football season?

The fantasy football playoffs are upon us. It’s time to improve our fantasy football rosters through the waiver wire for Week 16. Let’s take a look at the top waiver wire targets and pickups for this coming week.

Week 16 Waiver Wire Targets | Quarterbacks

Which players can help your roster in advance of Week 16? Tua Tagovailoa remains on the streaming radar. All roster percentages are from FleaFlicker.

Tua Tagovailoa, Miami Dolphins (75% rostered)

Tua Tagovailoa remains available in more than half of Yahoo leagues. Even in an overall poor outing against the Jets, Tua got to a respectable 15 fantasy points. Next week, the Dolphins get the Saints’ pass-funnel defense. Tua makes for an excellent streamer.

Week 16 Waiver Wire Pickups | Running Backs

Week 16 has a few handcuffs on the fantasy football waiver wire worth stashing at running back, but the most important add is Samaje Perine. There are several other running backs worth taking a shot on, such as Craig Reynolds, Justin Jackson, and Duke Johnson.

Justin Jackson, Los Angeles Chargers (18% rostered)

Austin Ekeler was clearly limited Thursday night. He played a season-low 34% of the snaps. Although he’s going to play in Week 16, if he’s once again limited, Justin Jackson could have value alongside Ekeler.

Jackson played 54% of the snaps Thursday night and had 86 yards on 13 carries. At the bare minimum, he belongs on fantasy rosters.

Duke Johnson, Miami Dolphins (13% rostered)

I guess we need to add Duke Johnson. Myles Gaskin and Salvon Ahmed were healthy and active, but Johnson led the Dolphins’ backfield in snaps and touches. He carried the ball 22 times for 107 yards and 2 touchdowns. Will that ever happen again? Probably not. But even if you’re not starting Johnson, make sure your opponent can’t either. He is rostered in just 1% of Yahoo leagues.

Craig Reynolds, Detroit Lions (16% rostered)

Jamaal Williams will probably be back next week, but Craig Reynolds has been good enough that he may not cede his role to Williams. Reynolds carried the ball 26 times for 112 yards in a game that went completely opposite of what everyone expected.

The Lions certainly won’t experience extreme positive game script often. Nevertheless, Reynolds is getting too much volume to be ignored.

Samaje Perine, Cincinnati Bengals (27% rostered)

Late in the fourth quarter of the Bengals’ win over the Broncos, Joe Mixon went down with a knee injury. While we don’t know how serious it is, Samaje Perine would be the primary running back if Mixon has to miss any time. Perine would be startable as an RB2 and is worth adding.

Week 16 Waiver Wire Pickups | Wide Receivers

Here are the wide receivers to target on the Week 16 fantasy football waiver wire. Amon-Ra St. Brown is a mandatory pickup, while Josh Reynolds and Laquon Treadwell are worth a shot.

Amon-Ra St. Brown (46% rostered) and Josh Reynolds, Detroit Lions (22% rostered)

It goes without saying that the Lions’ offense won’t be as prolific as it was against the Cardinals. Even so, Amon-Ra St. Brown and Josh Reynolds need to be rostered.

St. Brown caught 8 of 11 targets for 90 yards and a touchdown. He’s now seen at least 11 targets in three straight games. Reynolds has had double-digit fantasy points in three of his last four games. Both should be on fantasy rosters.

Laquon Treadwell, Jacksonville Jaguars (11% rostered)

It’s not flashy, but Laquon Treadwell just gets to 10 fantasy points. Nothing more, nothing less. This marked his fourth straight week between 9 and 12 PPR fantasy points. He’s been the Jaguars’ WR1, for whatever that’s worth. If you need a floor-based WR4, Treadwell is worth a pickup.
