Fantasy Football News: J.K. Dobbins, RB rankings, and Mac Jones takes over

The latest episode of In the Mood for Fantasy Football is here, jam-packed with content revolving around the latest fantasy football news.

The latest episode of Pro Football Network’s In The Mood for Fantasy Football Podcast discussed the most pressing fantasy football news, like the Patriots’ release of Cam Newton and running back J.K. Dobbins’ season-ending knee injury. Tommy and I also talked quarterbacks, running backs, wide receivers, and tight ends that we’ve drafted the most this summer or have targeted heavily in recent fantasy football drafts.

Fantasy Football News | Mac Jones era begins in New England

This was a shocker. Patriots head coach Bill Belichick has praised Newton publicly during his tenure with the team. New England didn’t try to trade Newton prior to his release. The veteran quarterback’s COVID-19 testing mixup prevented him from entering the Patriots’ team facility last week. This incident created an opportunity for Jones to solidify his role as the team’s starting quarterback. Newton’s incentive-laden contract ultimately made him expendable.

Newton would have earned $5.1 million if healthy and on the roster as a backup. He could have earned up to $6.6 million if he started all season and $8.6 million if he was the starter and the Patriots made the playoffs. Furthermore, Newton could have made up to $13.6 million based on additional incentives.

Jones’ collegiate body of work at Alabama is well-known. The rookie backed up Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts his first three seasons (including redshirting as a freshman) with the Crimson Tide. He entered his 2020 junior campaign as the starter and led Alabama to a national championship. Last season, Jones was Alabama’s all-time single-season passing yardage leader (4,500). What impact will he have on the Patriots’ offense?

Having Jones and not Newton as the starter is a great thing for running back Damien Harris. He won’t have to worry about Newton siphoning away rushing attempts. Jones’ presence also elevates the fantasy value of the other Patriots’ skill-position players.

J.K. Dobbins suffered a torn ACL and will miss the 2021 season

Ravens offensive coordinator Greg Roman has publicly stated that running back Gus Edwards will handle a much larger workload this season due to Dobbins’ injury. Baltimore led the NFL in rushing attempts (34.6) and rushing yards (192) per game.

Players we’ve drafted the most this summer

Tommy and I discussed 10 players we have drafted the most this summer on our fantasy football teams.

One player that has found his way on many of my teams is Bears running back David Montgomery. He is undervalued when you analyze his ADP. Montgomery averaged nearly 20 opportunities last season in Chicago and closed out the season with six consecutive RB1 performances from Weeks 12-17.

Montgomery should see still see a similar number of opportunities this season. Tarik Cohen is a candidate to be placed on the PUP list, while Damien Williams profiles as more of a change-of-pace option, in my opinion.

Bringing it all together

This is a taste of what Tommy and I discussed in the latest episode of In The Mood for Fantasy Football, a Pro Football Network podcast that keeps you up to date on the latest NFL news and how to adjust your lineups weekly with start/sit, waiver wire, and draft advice.
