The Top Kickers To Start in Week 2

Jason Myers, Seattle Seahawks (at NE)

After one week, the New England Patriots don’t exactly look like a pushover. They held the Cincinnati Bengals to just 10 points and one field goal attempt in an upset victory. However, that likely had more to do with the ineptitude of the Bengals than the Patriots suddenly being a formidable opponent.

The Seattle Seahawks are 3.5-point favorites over the Patriots on the road. Good weather is expected, so that is not a concern.

Last week, Jason Myers attempted two field goals and two extra points, connecting on them all. It was in a game where the Seahawks’ own players admitted they did not play their best, despite coming out with a victory. The Seahawks should perform better this week. However, the Patriots do have a quality defense that should be good enough to not break. That’s exactly what we look for.

This is a situation where Seattle may find itself driving into scoring position but unable to punch the ball in the end zone, resulting in multiple field goal tries for Myers.

Matt Gay, Indianapolis Colts (at GB)

After missing Week 1 due to injury, the Indianapolis Colts have their primary kicker back for the second week of the season. This should’ve been a spot to fade the Colts as underdogs against a team they would likely need to prioritize touchdowns, not field goals. Jordan Love’s absence changes everything.

The Packers are going to start Malik Willis for what I imagine will be the first and only time this season. There are 96 quarterbacks on NFL rosters (including emergency third QBs). I would rank Willis 97th. It truly blows my mind that he is on an NFL roster, let alone starting a football game that counts.

The Colts should be able to control this game, leading to multiple scoring drives. Perhaps they score a touchdown on all of them, but I doubt it.

Gay struggled a bit last season, but otherwise has been a very good kicker throughout his career. He made 93.3% and 94.1% of his kicks in 2022 and 2021. After not generating a field goal attempt last week, look for the Colts to rebound and for Gay to drill multiple kicks this week in Green Bay.
