Sky Sports’ Formula 1 commentary team has often been criticized for showing a preference toward British drivers, a perception fueled by the largely UK-based lineup of analysts. Drivers such as Max Verstappen, along with many fans, have publicly voiced concerns over the broadcaster’s tone. The recent incident involving Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris has only added to the scrutiny.
Fans Bash Sky Sports’ Coverage of Lando Norris-Oscar Piastri Title Situation
Sky Sports’ F1 team discussed the title race involving Norris, Piastri, and Verstappen. They analyzed the possible scenario in which Piastri might have to let Norris pass him to win the World Championship.
Whether Piastri would let him by was compared with how Verstappen would allegedly never do it. David Croft leaned hard on the fact that F1 is a team sport, so it would be reasonable for Piastri to want the drivers’ title to go to McLaren rather than Red Bull.
And fans online pushed back, criticizing the Sky Sports crew for what they saw as clear favoritism toward Norris.
“You lot are genuinely embarrassing,” Ferrari News tweeted. “Champions like Michael Schumacher, Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, or Lewis Hamilton would’ve never done this. Hell, if it was the other way round (Oscar leading and Lando 16 behind), you wouldn’t even be suggesting it.”
Andrew Turmer slammed Croft’s “cheerleading” for Norris and team boss Zak Brown, stating that Piastri should prioritize himself.
“Crofty humiliating himself with more cheerleading for Zak and Lando,” he posted. “It’s been incredibly disappointing to see the extent to which Sky F1 has turned into a Lando lobbying group. It’s obvious why Piastri should put himself first after months of getting messed around.”
Another user alluded to Croft’s alleged agenda, writing:
“Crafty playing his usual British games. During the race he was advocating that Fernando should help McLaren because he owes them.”
Sami underscored the difference between the drivers’ title and the constructors’ title, suggesting that Piastri has the right to be selfish.
“Is Crofty an idiot?” he bashed the commentator. “I really want to know. This is WDC personal glory no one cares about in terms of bonuses and benefits for the team, what only count is WCC for them.”
While McLaren will aim for the drivers’ title by any means necessary, the team would like to avoid a controversial situation to win the championship. History holds numerous examples of the problematic situations that teams have found themselves in when both their drivers have a shot at the title.
