F1 Teams Sound Alarm as Cadillac Threatens 2026 Pecking Order

Formula 1 is set to welcome a new competitor to its grid in 2026 as Cadillac joins the established order as the sport’s eleventh team. Backed by the resources of General Motors and secured a power unit partnership with Ferrari, the American entry has generated considerable attention within the paddock.

Leading figures across the grid have begun publicly cautioning rivals against underestimating the newcomer’s potential, signaling genuine concern about how the ambitious project could reshape the competitive balance when fresh regulations arrive next season.

Why F1 Figures Say Cadillac Could Be 2026’s Dark Horse

Technical leaders and team principals have issued clear warnings that Cadillac should not be dismissed as a mere newcomer struggling to find its footing in Formula 1. Simone Resta, former Mercedes’ deputy technical director, drew upon his experience with regulatory changes to assess Cadillac’s prospects.

“You can start a new cycle with a small team and achieve good results from the beginning. So don’t underestimate them,” Resta stated, highlighting how the reset of technical regulations can level the playing field for ambitious new entries.

Resta’s caution extends beyond general commentary, reflecting his observations on how Cadillac has structured its operations. He highlighted the team’s substantial investment in personnel and its strategic partnership with Ferrari for power units as significant advantages. By securing the Italian manufacturer’s engine package, Cadillac has removed a major technical hurdle that typically forces new teams to expend resources on power unit development, allowing the American outfit to concentrate its efforts entirely on chassis and aerodynamic performance.

Andy Stevenson, the sporting director at Aston Martin, echoed similar sentiments regarding the threat posed by Cadillac’s entry.

“I hope Cadillac isn’t too strong, but we can’t underestimate them. They are a real challenge and, from what we see so far, a very professional team,” Stevenson remarked, reflecting both the respect and genuine concern felt across the grid. His assessment suggests that initial assessments of the team’s operational efficiency have impressed established competitors.

Perez and Bottas Lead Cadillac’s Charge Into F1’s New Era

Cadillac has assembled a driver lineup featuring two world-class competitors with extensive Grand Prix experience. The team confirmed Sergio Perez and Valtteri Bottas for its 2026 campaign, bringing a combined total of 527 Grand Prix starts and 16 race victories to the American entry. Both drivers possess championship-winning credentials and have previously competed at the highest levels of the sport.

Stevenson specifically praised the team’s driver selection, commenting on the significance of their experience to the project. Regarding Perez, he stated: “As for Checo, I’m a big fan of his, and I’d love to see him relaunch his career. He has great talent and is a great driver, and I think it’s great to see him again on the track.” After a year away from competition, Perez returns to Formula 1 with a wealth of experience gained from his time competing against the sport’s elite.

Stevenson also acknowledged Bottas’ return to the grid after his sabbatical, noting: “We should not forget about Valtteri. It’s very exciting for him, and it’s a good opportunity to come back after a year away.” Bottas brings 246 Grand Prix starts and 10 race wins to Cadillac, providing a stable and experienced presence as the team navigates its inaugural season under the new regulations.
