Brock Purdy, once the last pick in the NFL Draft, has signed a five-year, $265 million contract extension with the San Francisco 49ers, making him the highest-paid player in franchise history and one of the league’s top earners at quarterback.
Purdy’s extension comes after a season that saw the 49ers struggle to a 6-11 record amid injuries and roster turnover, but the young quarterback’s earlier success-leading the team to two NFC Championship appearances and a Super Bowl berth in his first two seasons, cemented his value in the eyes of team leadership.

Purdy’s Contract Extension Numbers Draw Praise From Former NFL QB
The new deal drew immediate praise from around the league, as former NFL quarterback Chase Daniel called the $53 million per year figure “a perfect number for Brock Purdy” in a social media post Friday.

The agreement, confirmed Friday by multiple league sources, includes $181 million in total guarantees and $165.05 million secured in the first three years. Purdy, 25, is now under contract through the 2030 season, with an average annual value of $53 million, tying him for seventh among NFL quarterbacks in yearly salary.
“Brock has produced inarguable success,” 49ers CEO Jed York said, noting that much of the team’s offseason roster reshuffling was done to make room for Purdy’s new contract.
The 49ers capitalized on Purdy’s rookie deal to build a talented roster, but now shift into a new era with their quarterback among the league’s highest-paid.
Purdy’s $53 million annual average means he is now on par with Jared Goff and Tua Tagovailoa, behind only some other quarterbacks in the league, including Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Jordan Love, and Trevor Lawrence in average salary.
Purdy’s $181 million in guarantees ranks second only to Deshaun Watson’s $230 million.
Purdy, who was set to earn just $5.3 million in the final year of his rookie deal, now becomes the face of the franchise for the long term. The 49ers, who have long relied on a strong supporting cast built around a low-cost quarterback, are betting that he can deliver at a level commensurate with his new contract.
Purdy’s extension comes as the 49ers hope to bounce back from a 6-11 record in 2024, a campaign also marred by injuries and roster turnover. Amid the team’s struggles, Purdy stood out, throwing for 3,864 yards and 20 touchdowns in 15 starts last season.
With several key players departing in the offseason, the 49ers hope Purdy will spearhead a revamped roster. Head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch have both publicly voiced their confidence in Purdy’s leadership and performance.
“Brock is the leader of our team,” Shanahan said earlier this year. “We’re capable of winning a Super Bowl with him. We just almost did. And I know he’s capable of getting the Niners a Super Bowl in the future.”
