Shedeur Sanders is about to face the biggest test of his football career. With Dillon Gabriel sidelined in the concussion protocol, the rookie quarterback is expected to make his first NFL start for the Cleveland Browns in a critical Week 12 game against the Las Vegas Raiders.
The pressure is immense, not just to win, but to silence the critics already questioning if he belongs after a shaky debut.
How Will Shedeur Sanders Handle the Pressure of His First NFL Start?
On his “Speakeasy Podcast,” former NFL linebacker Emmanuel Acho provided a stark warning for head coach Kevin Stefanski about the situation facing his young quarterback.
“Shedeur has never been under more pressure playing the game of football in his life than he will be this weekend, making his first start,” Acho said Monday. “I do not judge last week’s performance. He had not gotten reps with the ones, and he came in the middle of the game versus a vaunted Baltimore Ravens defense the past four weeks.”
Acho continued, highlighting the external scrutiny on Sanders. “This Sunday, Raiders suck. The Raiders may be the worst team in football… a lot of the world is praying on Shedeur’s downfall. Waiting for Shedeur to fail. So they can say I told you so. So they can say put Dillon Gabriel back in there. But imagine a world where Shedeur has a Dak Prescott versus the Raiders type of performance.”

That pressure Acho mentioned stems directly from Sanders’ rocky debut against the Ravens. Since last Sunday, both Sanders and the Browns organization have been under scrutiny for his apparent lack of preparation. In that relief appearance, Sanders completed just four of 16 passes for 47 yards and was sacked twice. Additionally, he rushed for 16 yards on three carries but committed two turnovers, one fumble and one interception.
As Acho pointed out, another performance like that won’t cut it on Sunday. However, the matchup appears much more favorable this time around, as the Raiders present a far less intimidating challenge. According to PFSN’s defensive impact metric, Las Vegas currently ranks 26th with a defense impact score of 68.8.
This 2025-26 season, Las Vegas has only held two opponents under 20 points: the Tennessee Titans and the Denver Broncos. While the Titans also featured a rookie quarterback against the Raiders’ defense, that player was not making his first career start, a key difference from the situation Sanders faces this weekend.
The opportunity is clear. If Sanders wants to make a serious case to remain the starter for the rest of the season, he must elevate a struggling Browns offense. A strong performance could secure his role, but if he falters, the job will almost certainly revert to Gabriel once he is healthy.
