The San Francisco 49ers handed their star quarterback, Brock Purdy, a jaw-dropping deal on Friday, May 16. Mr. Irrelevant — the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft — signed a $265 million contract extension and will stay in San Francisco through the 2030 season.
Former Broncos cornerback Domonique Foxworth seems to be impressed by the 49ers’ decision to extend Purdy.

Domonique Foxworth on Brock Purdy’s Huge Contract Extension
Purdy’s contract has an average annual value of $53 million. He will make $2.9 million each week, $300k more than his combined salary of the first three years. In the “Fact and Fiction” segment of ESPN’s “Get Up” show, ex-Broncos CB Foxworth shared his opinion on the hefty deal.
“I don’t care whether it’s fact or fiction. None of that matters. Let’s be clear about what Brock Purdy did there, he saved everyone’s d*** job. Pay him all the money he wants. Mr. Irrelevant showed up,” Domonique said. (7:05)
The 42-year-old went on to remind everyone of Purdy’s brilliance even after the 49ers’ failed Trey Lance experiment.
“Let’s not forget that they compiled a bunch of capital to go get Trey Lance, and it didn’t work out. When you make picks like that and it doesn’t work out, everyone gets fired unless Mr. Irrelevant shows up,” he added.
Foxworth also shed light on Brock’s stats and his role in the team by saying,
“He is still statistically one of the best quarterbacks in the league over the time that he’s gotten there. I don’t care if you want to give credit to the Shanahans’ scheming or the talent around him, the fact of the matter is he has earned this money.”
He wants the 49ers to pay Purdy as much money as needed to keep him on the roster, no matter what.
“So, I don’t give a d*** whether it’s going to be harder to build a roster going forward or not, that man saved everybody’s job. He deserved more than they are paying him. Keep paying him more and more money, and figure it out on the back end. Draft well, do something, play good defense. I don’t care what you do, but don’t take any money from Brock Purdy.” Fxoworth concluded.
Purdy stepped into the NFL as Mr. Irrelevant, but injuries forced the 49ers to give him the starting role. It turned out to be one of the best decisions of the franchise as the rookie took the NFL by storm, taking his side to the NFC Championship game.
He did himself one better in the following season. Brock charted 4,280 passing yards in his second season, a franchise record, and took his side to the Super Bowl. Even last season, he recorded 3,864 passing yards. The 49ers have put their faith in Purdy to help them bounce back after a disappointing season.
Purdy now sits seventh in the highest annual salary among quarterbacks list behind Dak Prescott ($60 million), Josh Allen, Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence, Jordan Love (all at $55 million), and Tua Tagovailoa ($53.1 million).
