Steelers vs. Falcons Prediction

After a Monday night victory over the Indianapolis Colts, the Steelers now find themselves tied with the Cleveland Browns in the AFC North and are scrapping to find a way into the playoff picture.

The Steelers have struggled to find any rhythm on offense this year with QB changes, young receivers getting acclimated to the NFL, and running backs in and out of the lineup. However, they’ve shown signs of life here in recent weeks and will now take on a tough Falcons team that knows how to battle and fight to stay close in games.

Pittsburgh’s offense didn’t necessarily move the ball a ton through the air in Week 12 — just 174 passing yards for Kenny Pickett — but the running game was the star of the show.

Multiple running backs stepped up and were able to help deliver a victory over a tough opponent in Indianapolis. They’ll be needed to step up again this week with some potential key injuries to the Steelers’ depth chart, but they do have a favorable matchup against an Atlanta defense that’s given up 127.5 rushing yards per game so far this year.

The key for Pittsburgh winning this matchup though comes down to the defensive side and shutting down the Falcons’ run game. Atlanta knows how to run the ball effectively with their rotation of running backs, but they’ll have a tough time against Pittsburgh’s defense that’s allowing the sixth-fewest rushing yards per contest. If Pittsburgh can keep the running game in check for Atlanta, they should be able to advance to 5-7 on the season.

As for the Falcons, they now have a 5-7 record after a close loss in Week 12 against the Washington Commanders. However, they have a chance this week to take control of the NFC South with a victory and a Buccaneers loss, which would put them atop the division. The importance of winning this game cannot be overstated for Atlanta.

As mentioned above, the Falcons’ running game is their strength. After 12 weeks, they have the fourth-most rushing yards in the NFL, with 160.0 on average. That’s helped take a lot of the pressure off of Marcus Mariota and the absence of playmakers in the receiving game like Kyle Pitts.

The ability to control the clock and keep opposing offenses on the sideline has been crucial so far this year due to the state of the Falcons’ defense and them allowing the sixth-most points per game.

The key for Atlanta winning this game depends on their run game winning a tough matchup against Pittsburgh’s rush defense. The Steelers are allowing just 103.4 rushing yards per game, which is far less than the 160 that Atlanta averages. Something will have to give.

If the Falcons can consistently pick up chunk yardage with their litany of options in the run game, we should see them come out on top of this one.
