Commanders vs. Giants Prediction
This matchup between the Commanders and the Giants has massive playoff implications. Washington has now won six of their last seven games, while New York has lost three out of their last four, and the NFC East has suddenly become an incredibly tight division. All four teams are now at least two games above .500, which makes these games incredibly important.
As mentioned, Washington’s on a roll recently with Taylor Heinicke at QB, and they’re playing excellent complementary football. The running backs have stepped up and are helping to convert key third downs to keep the chains moving, while Heinicke’s doing a great job of putting his playmakers in a position to succeed.
Meanwhile, the defense has stepped up and is prohibiting a lot of their opponents from putting up points on the board. Over just the past three games, Washington is allowing the fifth-fewest points with an average of 14.7 per game. And that includes a matchup against the high-powered Philadelphia Eagles passing attack.
For Washington to walk out of this game with a victory, the offense needs to flow through the running backs. The Giants have allowed the 7th most rushing yards per game so far this season, while their pass defense has been a much stronger unit up to this point. If Brian Robinson and Antonio Gibson can consistently move the chains, Ron Rivera should call their name time and time again to dominate the time of possession.
As for the Giants, they need to snap this two-game losing skid. They were a tremendously disciplined team through the first half of the year and were pulling out late-game victories, but their depth has been tested here recently – especially in the WR corps – and they need to have other players step up to help out.
Players like Sterling Shepard and Wan’Dale Robinson landing on IR were very important to this team as reliable chain movers over the middle of the field, and there hasn’t necessarily been another player to step into that role.
Daniel Jones appeared to be playing his way into a much larger contract with the Giants long-term this season, but his play has fallen off in recent weeks, with just five passing touchdowns over the past five games.
The lack of playmakers in the WR room can certainly be a factor in that decline, but the Giants will need more from their QB in this matchup against the Washington defense that’s allowing just the 10th-fewest points per game this season.
The key to winning this game for New York lies solely on the shoulders of their best offensive player, Saquon Barkley. Over the past two games, Barkley has just 61 rushing yards combined and one touchdown.
He isn’t necessarily being utilized as a threat in the receiving game, either, with just 26 total receiving yards on 11 targets over that same time frame. If the Giants want to win this game, they need more from No. 26 and this rushing attack. It won’t be easy against the Washington defensive front.
