Some may think it unlikely that a Super Bowl-winning quarterback would feel the need to seek advice from others, but that is precisely what those who want to become legends do.
It’s what Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts did. He helped lead the Eagles through a remarkable 2024 season, where it felt like a Lombardi Trophy was their destiny. After the Eagles became Super Bowl Champions, Hurts acknowledged that seeking guidance was key to turning potential into a championship legacy.

After Hurts won the Super Bowl, he began to think about how his team could repeat the feat. Only nine teams have ever won back-to-back Super Bowls, including the Chiefs, Green Bay Packers, Miami Dolphins, New England Patriots, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys, and Denver Broncos. The Pittsburgh Steelers are the only team to achieve this feat twice.
Hurts wants the Eagles to join this exclusive club, so he began reaching out to other athletes who have repeat championships, including two sports legends: MLB’s Derek Jeter and NBA’s Michael Jordan. According to a post on X from John Clark from NBC Sports, Hurts shared this during a press conference.
“Super Bowl MVP Jalen Hurts says today that he has spoken to Michael Jordan and Derek Jeter about trying to repeat as champs,” wrote Clark on X after the Eagles’ press conference.

In his Time 100 blurb on Hurts, Jeter wrote, “We connected shortly after [the Super Bowl] and the only thing he asked about was insight on going back and winning again. Sometimes people win, then exhale. Jalen is not exhaling. He’s embracing the next challenge. Win or lose, Jalen’s resilience and determination offer all of us something to admire.”
From Benched To Beloved: Hurts Earns Admiration For His Resilience
Jeter said one of the things he most admired about Hurts was his ability to bounce back from adversity. The topic of adversity is one Jeter has been open about. He struggled early in his career, dealt with racial prejudice, and injuries.
Jordan had to overcome his own obstacles, including being cut, his father’s tragic murder, and mental health struggles.
Hurts earned their admiration by rising above his challenges. During his time at the University of Alabama, head coach Nick Saban benched him during a national championship game in favor of Tua Tagovailoa. This led to his transfer to Oklahoma. Since arriving in the NFL, he has faced constant scrutiny for his pocket presence, accuracy, and turnovers.
However, Hurts did not let losing a previous Super Bowl damage his confidence. He continued to fight to improve and earn his place among the top quarterbacks in the league. PFSN’s QB+ metric gave Hurts a grade of B+ for 2024, which ranked him fourth overall.
The Eagles and Hurts will face an uphill battle in 2025 if they want to return to the Super Bowl. They face not only an improved NFC East but also one of the toughest strengths of schedule in the league.
