Miami Dolphins News, April 13: Jackson Powers-Johnson To Visit Franchise, New Safety Jordan Poyer Addresses Buffalo Exit, and More

Here's the latest news involving the Miami Dolphins, including a projected first-rounder set to visit and Jordan Poyer sharing 2024 vision.

The Miami Dolphins are trekking toward addressing the trenches in the 2024 NFL Draft. But one incoming visitor points to the franchise placing interior offensive line help as the highest draft priority.

Miami Dolphins News Today

A pre-draft visit from arguably the best center in the draft and another intriguing offensive line prospect projected to fall to Miami help headline today’s Dolphins news!

Jackson Powers-Johnson on His Way to Miami: Report

Oregon center Jackson Powers-Johnson has earned hefty praise for his tenacious blocking and stellar play on the line. Many, including PFN’s Ian Cummings, believe he’s the best pure center for this upcoming class. And now he’s going to check out the Dolphins, according to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald on Friday.

“Per source, Oregon’s Jackson Powers-Johnson is among the players the Dolphins are summoning to team headquarters for a ’30’ visit,” Jackson reported.

Just how interested are the Dolphins in pursuing Powers-Johnson?

“Miami is very much intrigued by last year’s Rimington Trophy winner (the award given to the nation’s top center),” Jackson shared.

Center is considered a high need for the Dolphins. While the team managed to sign Aaron Brewer to a three-year deal, he’s not considered the lock to replace Connor Williams. Brewer also has questionable pass-blocking consistency, allowing 21 sacks over the past three seasons — the most among qualified centers per ESPN. Powers-Johnson could power the Dolphins’ pass-protecting tactics if drafted.

Does Miami Take Powers-Johnson in Newest Mock Draft? Dolphins Do Turn to OL Help

While Powers-Johnson is on his way to meet with the Miami brass, does he land at No. 21 in PFN’s newest Mock Draft out Friday?

Dallas Robinson has the Dolphins rolling with offensive line help, except it’s Georgia’s Amarius Mims landing in South Beach.

“Amarius Mims blew up the Scouting Combine, posting a 5.07-second 40-yard dash and a 9’3″ broad jump at 6’8″ and 340 pounds. A tweaked hamstring ended his day, but NFL evaluators must be intrigued by the 21-year-old Mims’ athletic upside,” Robinson began.

But here’s why the massive and powerful Mims is considered a fit for Miami.

“Count the Dolphins among those teams with potential interest. Mims would become Terron Armstead’s long-term left tackle successor but could start immediately if Miami wants to play him at guard,” Robinson said.

While Powers-Johnson brings interior strength and tenacity at center, Mims is versatile enough to bounce between guard and tackle. He could be one to watch at No. 21 if he’s available to the Dolphins.

New Safety Jordan Poyer Shares Hope for Miami While Addressing Buffalo Exit

Meanwhile, one guaranteed new Dolphin is safety Jordan Poyer. The veteran defender and former rival comes in as a prized free agent addition for Miami from this past March.

Poyer goes from game-planning then competing against the Dolphins to now suiting up for them. The longtime Buffalo Bills safety sat down with Sirius XM NFL Radio on Wednesday to reflect on his last league home before addressing his plans for the Dolphins.

“I mean, I was released in Buffalo, so … I loved my time out there,” Poyer said. “I loved every bit of (it) — I was able to learn, explore, grow, be with the crowd, be with my fans, my family, my daughter — she grew up out there in Buffalo — so a lot of respect and love for the city of Buffalo.”

Still, the 32-year-old and 2021 All-Pro is energized to join the Dolphins.

“But, new beginnings out here in South Florida, and I’m excited about it and excited about the opportunity to be with the football team that they have, and I’m just here to help to see if we can get over the hump,” he said.
