‘I Know What’s Behind the Curtain’ — Deion Sanders Won’t Let Shedeur Sanders Play for Multiple NFL Teams

Deion Sanders sent a clear message about how he will handle Shedeur Sanders' career, with some teams considered unacceptable landing spots.

While the best teams in the NFL are still hoping to bring home a Super Bowl, a bulk of the teams are out of the running and now looking forward to the 2025 NFL Draft. With a loaded draft class, teams are lining up for blue-chip players to lead them into a new era. Among the biggest names in the class is Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders.

Son of the legendary Deion Sanders, Shedeur Sanders is widely projected to be an early first-round pick, perhaps going No. 1 overall. But, with so many teams vying for his services, Coach Prime has made it clear that he will be helping his son navigate the NFL landscape.

Deion Sanders Says Shedeur Sanders Is Banned From Playing for Some Teams

During an appearance on the “Tamron Hill Show,” Prime Time did not mince any words when speaking about his son’s future. According to him, as a former NFL superstar, he must show his son the right path.

“That’s my son. [If] you’ve got a child going into an occupation that you’ve already dominated in, come on, you think I’m not going to sit there like a navigational system? [I’ll] tell him, ‘Take a right there, take a left right there. Uh uh, not that [turn], no no.’ That’s my son! I’m not gonna let my son get down to no foolishness,” Sanders said.

For many, the quarterback is the top passer available in the upcoming NFL Draft. His scouting report generally considers him as the most accurate, reliable, and NFL-ready quarterback in the 2025 NFL Draft, with the ability to operate full-field reads and manipulate the middle of the field.

As such, many teams would be clamoring for an opportunity to bring him on board. But, Sanders has made it clear that there are a few teams that the youngster is prohibited from joining.

“It’s not like that,” Sanders clarified. “It’s not who I would like him to play for — it’s a couple teams I wouldn’t allow him to play for. This is my profession! I know what’s behind the curtain! We ain’t gotta get back there for me to understand what’s behind the curtain and what’s not [best] for my son. I’m not doing it. Ain’t no way in the world.”

Naturally, the same doubts that emerged when discussions about Bronny James and LeBron James came up. More specifically, what if they aren’t on the same page or the youngster outright doesn’t heed his advice?

“Who?! Who?! No. You must mean the owners — not my son,” Coach Prime said. “My son knows my voice and he understands that I’ve done this and done that. My kids respect their father because they know their father isn’t perfect, but their father has always been present.”

It remains to be seen where Shedeur Sanders ends up in the NFL Draft. The Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, and New York Giants hold the first three overall picks and conventional wisdom suggests Sanders is falling to one of these three quarterback-needy teams. Each of those teams’ Week 1 starting quarterbacks fell to 32nd or worse by PFN’s QB+ metric in 2024.

Earlier in the year, rumors of Sanders rocking Giants cleats left the internet buzzing, with many considering it a sign of how things might shake out. Coach Prime confirmed that his quarterback had Giants, Raiders, and Titans cleats as well. It seems like these are three locations that the NFL Hall of Famer is okay with sending his son to.

Those teams desperately need a quarterback, and even though Sanders doesn’t have the athletic upside of others, his mobility is underrated. Despite playing behind one of the worst offensive lines in college football, the Colorado QB’s pocket navigation is extremely impressive, setting him up to potentially start from the jump as a rookie.

While some question his overall arm strength, he generates enough velocity to check the box and is exceptionally accurate.

Going further, Sanders’ processing, a trait honed across years of starting experience at the collegiate level, is also a relative strength. Sanders can operate pre-snap, recognize defensive looks, adjust protections, and progress through reads post-snap — and he’s a measured decision-maker who protects the ball more often than not.

With a ton of upside to his case, it seems likely that Sanders will land near the top of the draft. It just remains to be seen if it is to a Deion Sanders-approved team.
