Deion Sanders Gets Hilarious Call From Son, Shilo, to Cheer Him Up Before Surgery

It has been revealed that Colorado coach Deion Sanders is undergoing surgery to address blood clots in his lower body. Sanders has also since dismissed any notion that he needs to “slow down” because of his health issues. His team is 2-4 so far this season.

The latest health update for Sanders comes after the 58-year-old NFL Hall of Famer was experiencing pain during the Buffaloes’ 35-21 loss on the road at TCU on Oct. 4. At the time, he suspected blood clots had returned in his leg after undergoing surgery to remove similar blood clots in 2023. Sanders’ son, Shilo Sanders, has shown his support for his father.

Sanders signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2025 as an undrafted free agent but was cut during the preseason.

According to USA Today, Colorado has confirmed that Deion was undergoing an aspiration thrombectomy for the left popliteal and tibial arteries. Meaning, blood clots are being removed from his left leg, which is already missing two toes and much of his calf due to previous health issues.

Deion was named the 28th head coach in Colorado’s program history back in 2022. He also previously played as a cornerback in the NFL from 1989 to 2005, concluding his career with 53 interceptions and 1,331 yards.

His Instagram account showed Deion at this hospital with his son Deion Jr. and former NFL cornerback Adam “Pacman” Jones. Additionally, Deion was seen and heard on the phone with Shilo.

“If you give me $5 million just to have, I will make sure you don’t have to get surgery any more,” Shilo said jokingly to his dad regarding the then-upcoming surgery. Deion replied, “I don’t want nothing to do with your care.” Shilo then said, “I might keep ’bout two, but if you give me five I’ll make sure you alive,” to which Deion burst into laughter.

This particular exchange was seen in Shilo’s Instagram post, which he captioned, “Don’t worry Dad your #1 son got you!”

Deion agreed to a new contract with the Buffaloes in March, which is set to pay him around $10 million annually. The contract does have the stated disability provision:

“If after engaging in the interactive process with the University’s Center for Disability & Access, Coach is deemed unable to perform the essential functions of his job with or without reasonable accommodation, this Agreement will automatically terminate, and Sanders’ salary and all other benefits shall end in the month of such termination notice.”

Deion has had a history of blood-circulation issues, dating back to 2021.
