After a historic turnaround in the 2024 season, the Washington Commanders had to be proactive this offseason in an attempt to improve the roster. With Jayden Daniels having the greatest season for a rookie quarterback in NFL history, the onus was on the franchise to improve his supporting cast.
Through free agency and the 2025 NFL Draft, the Commanders left no stone unturned to build an even better roster for the upcoming year. That involved signing free agents, drafting the right talent, and even making trades for potential superstars like Deebo Samuel. Unfortunately, Samuel has now become the subject of some intense scrutiny.

Right at the start of free agency, Washington parted with a fifth-round pick to acquire Samuel from the San Francisco 49ers. A 2019 second-round pick for the organization, the “wide back”, as he likes to call himself, was having a rough go in his last few seasons.
Since a Pro Bowl season in 2021, where he tallied 1,405 receiving yards and six touchdowns, including a league-leading 18.2 yards per reception, his numbers have taken a downward turn. As a result, a change of landscape felt like a good option.
However, Samuel is the media’s favorite child after joining the Washington roster, but not for good reason. Clips of the wide receiver running routes during mandatory minicamp made the rounds online.
Yet, it made people wonder where the man who ran a 4.48 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine was. Concerns about Samuel’s weight gain also caused quite a buzz. Despite head coach Dan Quinn trying to assuage any fears, most people weren’t buying it.
During a rare live version of the Rich Eisen Show for the Fanatics Fest in New York, the podcast’s television producer, Chris Brockman, took on an active analyst role. When the conversation turned to the Commanders, Brockman was less than savory with his description of Samuel.

“Deebo Samuel looks fat and slow,” he began, before joking, “I think you could beat him in a 40.” While Quinn is promising that Samuel is among the fastest guys on the roster, he’s going to have a hard time convincing Brockman.
It might not be until we see the former All-Pro selection on the field that the final verdict can be made. But Washington has to be hoping that the presence of a superstar veteran can elevate Daniels and a Commanders offense that finished sixth on PFSN’s Offense+ metric.
