Davante Adams’ Fantasy Value: Should You Buy Low or Sell High on the New Jets WR After Trade?

Following his not-too-unexpected trade to the Jets, should fantasy managers be looking to trade for or trade away Davante Adams?

    Published on

In the real NFL, the Las Vegas Raiders traded Davante Adams to the New York Jets. In fantasy football, should fantasy managers be looking to buy Adams assuming a value spike joining Aaron Rodgers, or sell him based on the perceived positive impact of the real-life trade?

Should Fantasy Football Managers Trade For or Trade Away Davante Adams?

To start the season Adams looked very much like the same underwhelming fantasy asset he was last year. Quarterback play matters. Adams’ value took a hit going from Rodgers to Derek Carr. Then, it plummeted going from Carr to Jimmy Garoppolo/Aidan O’Connell.

Adams was averaging 15.0 fantasy points per game before a mid-week hamstring strain halted his season. (As a quick aside, I bet that hamstring feels a whole lot better now!) Last year, Adams averaged 15.6 ppg, his lowest since 2016.

While Adams isn’t quite as effective as he was in his prime, there definitely appears to be enough left to believe he can return to WR1 status if he gets a quarterback. Well, now he has one.

Obviously, Adams’ fantasy value has increased following his trade to the Jets. Although he will be competing with Garrett Wilson for targets, given Rodgers’ penchant for throwing to Allen Lazard, I have every confidence that Adams is about to supplant Wilson as the Jets’ WR1.

The key to making the right trade here is gauging the temperature of your league. This is truly a situation that could go either way.

Two things can be true. Adams will be more valuable reunited with Rodgers than he was last season with the Raiders. And, Adams is not about to morph into the super elite WR1 he was when both he and Rodgers were in their primes. As a reminder, Adams is imminently approaching his 32nd birthday.

Whether you should trade Adams depends almost entirely on whether there is someone in your league overstating the production increase he stands to gain from joining the Jets.

Whether you should trade for Adams depends on the reverse — is there someone in your league ready to pay a 2018-2021 Adams price to acquire him?

What Should Fantasy Managers Look For in a Potential Davante Adams Trade?

Everyone should be moving Adams up their rest-of-season rankings. That much the fantasy community can agree on. But how much?

It’s hard to use specific examples when leagues vary so wildly in so many aspects, but I will do my best.

An example of a player I think you could look to get in an Adams deal is Drake London. Fantasy managers may not have fully bought in to the idea of London as an every-week WR1, but it has happened. There’s a chance you could move Adams for London and a small piece.

Another name I’d look to acquire is A.J. Brown. His hamstring strain cost him three weeks. Plus, the Eagles had their bye. Fantasy managers have only gotten two games from Brown this season. He’s also scored 22.9 and 23.6 fantasy points in both of those games.

Brown is an elite WR1. He will be valued ahead of Adams, but it may not take a whole lot more with Adams to get Brown.

A few more ideas could be splitting Adams into Diontae Johnson or Terry McLaurin and another solid WR2. You could also try and package him with someone else for Justin Jefferson or Ja’Marr Chase.

Brian Robinson Jr. is also a guy I think is a prime trade target right now. He’s been banged up and missed last week’s game, but has a really good role on an offense that should be treated like one you want pieces of. You could probably get Robinson and a solid WR2/3 for Adams, and I’m not so sure Robinson isn’t straight-up more valuable than Adams by himself.

On the other side of things, depending on your situation, I might be willing to move injured players for Adams if you need wins now. Chris Olave and Nico Collins are both missing time. Even Puka Nacua and Marvin Harrison Jr. make sense. Moving them for a guy that can help you now makes sense if you need it.

Otherwise, the best move would be to try and trade hype names that you think might cool off a bit. Jameson Williams and Xavier Worthy for Adams? That’s a deal I’d happily make.

This is also a great time to move away from D’Andre Swift ahead of a really tough stretch of opponents. Given how elite Swift has been, it may not take much with him to get Adams. Perhaps you can even get a running back in return.
