The Buffalo Bills are once again entering the season with Super Bowl aspirations, but not everyone is convinced that they can get over the hump.
Two-time Super Bowl champion Damien Woody recently weighed in on Buffalo’s chances, making it clear that he’s not buying into the hype until quarterback Josh Allen proves he can beat Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes when it matters most.

Damien Woody Questions Whether Josh Allen Can Finally Beat Patrick Mahomes
Speaking on “Get Up”, Woody explained why he’s skeptical about Buffalo’s ability to reach the Super Bowl.
“I would not believe it. Listen, you would think everything this year is set up for Buffalo, the fact that they travel the least among any team in the National Football League this year. I think their team is ready, they’re there, but he hasn’t been able to climb Mount Mahomes. So until I see it… show me first before I believe in it.”
Woody’s comments highlight that Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are Buffalo’s biggest obstacle to reaching the Super Bowl.
Allen vs. Mahomes: A One-Sided Rivalry Continues
Allen and Mahomes have faced off nine times in their careers, with Mahomes holding a 5-4 edge overall. However, the real issue for Allen is the playoff matchups, where Mahomes has been dominant.
In their four postseason meetings, Mahomes has won every single one.
- 2020 AFC Championship: Chiefs won 38-24
- 2021 AFC Divisional Round: Chiefs won 42-36
- 2023 AFC Divisional Round: Chiefs won 27-24
- 2025 AFC Championship: Chiefs won 32-29
Despite Allen’s elite talent, he has yet to knock off Mahomes in the playoffs, which is why many analysts, including Woody, are hesitant to believe Buffalo can finally break through.
Mahomes has consistently found ways to outplay Allen in clutch moments, turning tight games into statement victories that continue to keep Buffalo out of the Super Bowl conversation.
Allen’s Playoff Struggles Against Mahomes Raises Doubts
Allen has put up strong numbers in his postseason battles with Mahomes, but it hasn’t been enough to get past the Chiefs. In all his playoff starts against the Chiefs quarterback, Allen has recorded 1,039 passing yards, nine touchdowns, an interception, and a completion percentage of 65.2%.
While Allen has played well, Mahomes has been even better, consistently making clutch plays when it matters most.
The issue isn’t necessarily Allen himself; it’s the matchup, where Kansas City has had the edge both strategically and execution-wise.
Can Allen Finally Overcome Mahomes in 2025?
Buffalo has retooled its roster, as Pro Football Network pointed out, adding key pieces to help Allen take the next step. But until he beats Mahomes in the playoffs, skepticism will remain.
The Bills hope their offensive upgrades and defensive adjustments will change the narrative, but history suggests Allen will need more than just a strong supporting cast. He’ll need to match Mahomes’ greatness in clutch time.
For Buffalo, 2025 isn’t just about chasing a Super Bowl; it’s about proving they can finally take down the team that’s stood in their way for years.
