Cowboys Trade Rumors: Jerry Jones, Mike McCarthy Provide Updates Ahead of NFL Trade Deadline

With the NFL’s trade deadline quickly approaching and the Dallas Cowboys having stayed still with any movement leading up to the deadline. Could that change?

The NFL’s trade deadline is on Tuesday at 4 p.m. ET. Teams across the league have until then to make midseason trades.

Latest Updates on Trade Talks From Mike McCarthy and Jerry Jones

The Cowboys have been radio silent in any trade talks over the last couple of weeks.

Mike McCarthy was asked about the trade deadline on Monday and made it clear that he is happy with the current personnel on the team right now.

“I’m not blind to what goes on, but I’m not sitting here with my fingers crossed, hoping that we trade for somebody… I believe in the men we have in the locker room,” said McCarthy.

Jerry Jones expressed the same kind of sentiment earlier last week when he stopped by practice and said, “If we don’t do anything at this trade deadline, we’ve got a team in my mind that can get us where we want to go.”

But this doesn’t mean Jones won’t make a trade, especially if it’s risky. The owner described himself as a risk-taker and added, “I am by nature active and by nature a risk-taker, so don’t come by unless you want to be struck at,” said Jones.

Areas of Concern for the Cowboys

If the Cowboys were to make a trade, there are only a few position groups that could use help if the price was right.

Tight End

It’s been known that the tight end room is the youngest on the team and needs a veteran leader after losing Dalton Schultz in the offseason to the Texans.

However, with the team adding Eric Saubert to the practice squad, this could change their course of thinking regarding trades for another tight end.

Jake Ferguson needs to be more involved in the offensive game plan to step into the starting role more. But Sunday’s game against the Rams was promising — Ferguson had four receptions for 47 yards.

Linebacker

The linebacker room is less stacked than it usually is for the Cowboys, with the most significant concern being the depth at the position.

With Leighton Vander Esch on injured reserve, the team could use more veteran depth in the room overall.

However, second-year players like Damone Clark and Markquese Bell have remained impressive inside the box.

Plus, the team added Rashaan Evans to the practice squad and elevated him on Sunday. He could add some veteran leadership until Vander Esch’s return.

Cornerback

The cornerback room was spruced up in the offseason after the Cowboys traded with the Colts for Stephon Gilmore.

However, with Trevon Diggs out for the season with an ACL injury, things changed quickly for the rest of the defense.

Both Jourdan Lewis and DaRon Bland have stepped into their respective roles to adjust in his absence.

Lewis is now taking full reps after returning from last season’s Lisfranc injury. Meanwhile, Bland leads the league in pick-sixes and set a Cowboys franchise record on Sunday against the Rams for the most within a season, and there is still a long season to go.

Dallas Cowboys Trades in 2023

Here are the trades the Cowboys have made in the last year:

  • The Cowboys traded with the Colts for a 2023 fifth-round draft pick for Stephon Gilmore.
  • The Cowboys traded with the Texans for a 2023 fifth-round and a 2024 sixth-round draft pick for Brandin Cooks.

April 2023

  • During the 2023 NFL Draft, the Cowboys traded with the Chiefs for a 2024 fifth-round draft pick to receive a sixth-round draft selection, in which they selected Eric Scott Jr.

August 2023

  • The Cowboys traded with the 49ers for a 2024 fourth-round draft pick for Trey Lance.
  • The Cowboys traded with the Dolphins, sending Kelvin Joseph to Miami and receiving Noah Igbinoghene.
