Ahead of the 2025 NFL Draft, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is stirring the pot again with a bold statement. Just two days before Round 1 kicks off, Jones and the Cowboys may be hinting at a big move on the horizon.
The Cowboys’ disappointing 2024 campaign has left fans wondering what’s next. With a talented roster and a high draft pick, could Dallas have a trick up its sleeve come Thursday night?

Dallas Cowboys Making Deals Before Draft Night?
As of now, the Cowboys hold the No. 12 overall pick in this year’s draft. But Jones’ recent comment that the team is working on “pretty substantive trades” suggests that selection could be on the move.
With the vague but intriguing message, the Cowboys appear to be discussing potential trades. Whether or not that includes the No. 12 pick is unclear. Still, after last season’s struggles, anything could be on the table.
Who Is on the Move and What Does Jones Want in Return?
Two of the Cowboys’ biggest stars have been mentioned in trade rumors this offseason. With 2021 NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year Micah Parsons entering the final year of his contract, there’s no doubt teams have checked in on the edge rusher.
Dak Prescott is also a name teams may be watching closely, especially those still searching for a quarterback. That speculation only grew after Jones traded for second-year quarterback Joe Milton III from New England.
If it’s Parsons, Prescott, or the No. 12 pick on the move, what’s Dallas looking for in return? Their 7-10 record in 2024 points to plenty of needs, with one of the most pressing being wide receiver.
CeeDee Lamb is a star, but outside of him, Dallas’ depth is thin. Jalen Tolbert is coming off a career year, but he fits best as a WR3. That’s why Denver Broncos receiver Courtland Sutton has been floated as a potential target. Sutton has been on the trade block for some time, although his growing connection with rookie QB Bo Nix could raise his asking price.
Another area Dallas needs help in is at running back. Adding Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders helps, but neither is viewed as a long-term solution. While Boise State’s Ashton Jeanty could fall to No. 12, the Cowboys can’t count on that. Thus, expect Dallas to be active in the RB market.
With other holes at cornerback and defensive tackle, it’s up to Jones and the front office to decide how they’ll fill the gaps — either by making a splash in the draft or making deals before the clock starts.
