The Dallas Cowboys were extremely quiet to start the offseason. A coaching change to upgrade the former offensive coordinator, Brian Schottenheimer, as the new head coach was the only major move the owner and general manager, Jerry Jones, engaged in.
A solid draft saw them address virtually every area of need, except for the wide receiver position. However, a trade for George Pickens has given the team the secondary pass catcher that they desperately needed. But with Pickens, the concern centers around off-the-field issues. However, Schottenheimer’s comments might give Cowboys fans a sigh of relief.
Brian Schottenheimer Raves About George Pickens
Since being drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2022, Pickens has spent the first three years of his career with the team, racking up some solid numbers while becoming a model of consistency with 48 games played out of a possible 51 in the regular season.
But, the issue has come due to his polarizing behaviour, sometimes within his own locker room. As a result, joining the limelight and tough market of Dallas felt like a major question mark, especially with a downgrade to WR2 behind CeeDee Lamb.
However, Brian Schottenheimer, in a meeting with the press, had the exact opposite message. “My time with him has been incredible. … We were all on board (with adding him). I see a guy that is maturing. He’s obviously a tremendous athlete,” reported Jon Machota.

Even RJ Ochoa had similar words to add. He wrote, “Dallas Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer said that the team does not have any culture concerns with George Pickens and that they are bringing him into their culture because they believe in him.”

For the time being, it seems like the doubts about his viability and personality with the Cowboys aren’t manifesting themselves. However, until we see the group play together on the field, it will be tough to make a judgment call.
In the meantime, though, Pickens offers Dallas everything it could need. Last year was a brutal one for the offense as they finished in the bottom 10 of the league on PFSN’s Offense+ metric.
While Dak Prescott suffered a season-ending injury, he wasn’t having a great season by any stretch of the imagination, ranking 30th on PFSN’s QB+ metric. Without a consistent second option outside of Lamb, those problems were going to persist.
But the addition of Pickens gives Prescott another legitimate threat to work with and potentially unlock another layer to the offense as a whole.
