Micah Parsons is one of the premier edge defenders in the NFL, yet he is entering the final year of his rookie contract. The Dallas Cowboys haven’t reached an agreement with their all-world outside linebacker, and owner Jerry Jones hasn’t done himself any favors with how he’s handled it in the media.
The two-time All-Pro will likely reset the EDGE market with his next contract, but Jones apparently prefers to wait.

Jerry Jones Catches Heat From Cowboys Fans For Puzzling Micah Parsons Comments
Parsons has been exceptional since being drafted by Dallas in 2021. He won Defensive Rookie of the Year and has made the Pro Bowl each of his four seasons. Myles Garrett reset the market by signing a $40 million per year extension with the Cleveland Browns this offseason, but Jones said he’d rather wait and get it right.
The Athletic’s Cowboys reporter Jon Machota had a pair of tweets breaking down Jones’s comments. The first was a video of Jones speaking with reporters, and the second was Machota tweeting another comment from Jones.

Jones said, “I know that I’ve spent five, six hours with him myself, and had a lot of discussions. Most of the issues, we’re in agreement on, and I’ve discussed it all. But we obviously don’t have an agreement relative to a new contract. Micah’s under contract, and we’ll see how that goes. It’s not uncommon for me to visit directly with players, and in this particular case, that’s how I’m doing it.”

Machota tweeted, “Cowboys owner Jerry Jones on Micah Parsons’ contract situation: ‘I don’t view it as urgent, at all.’ On waiting: ‘I’d rather pay more and get it right.'”
Jones has caught a lot of heat from the second tweet. His response of paying more to get it right has triggered a lot of confusion and anger from Cowboys fans, with some calling for him to sell the team.
One fan tweeted, “‘I’d rather pay more and get it right.’ Then why didn’t you sign Char[varius] Ward, Nick Bolton or anyone that could’ve helped with over 35 million in available cap space?” Ward signed with the Indianapolis Colts, and Bolton re-signed with the Kansas City Chiefs.
Dallas’s defense finished No. 25 in PFSN’s Defense+ metric last season, so adding top-of-market free agents would have been helpful.
Does he actually think we buy that statement or does he just not care? I lean toward the latter.

Average Joe tweeted, “Does he actually think we buy that statement or does he just not care? I lean toward the latter.” This reaction supports the idea that Jones has lost interest in winning, which was backed up by another tweet.
Spoken like a person that does not give a shit about winning!!!

Gary Robson tweeted, “Spoken like a person that does not give a s**t about winning!!!”
There was a lot of vitriol against Jones, with one fan wanting him to retire or sell the team.
Jerry needs to retire or sell the team. Selling is preferred since his son sucks as much as he does.
— Greg Bringle 🟧 (@Vegas82) April 1, 2025
Greg Bringle tweeted, “Jerry needs to retire or sell the team. Selling is preferred since his son sucks as much as he does.” Jerry’s son, Stephen Jones, has also caught heat now.
One fan thought Jones wasn’t serious, tweeting, “I wish this was an April fools joke.” Another fan disappointingly tweeted, “Jerry being Jerry again.”
Cowboys fans are at their wits’ end with how Jones is handling their team. The Cowboys haven’t gotten to the NFC Championship Game in 30 years and won’t get there anytime soon if they can’t lock up their best defensive player.
