Cowboys, Dolphins Predicted As Potential Landing Spots For ‘Elite’ 2-Time All-Pro

The Dallas Cowboys and the Miami Dolphins have very similar goals heading into the 2025 season. After a disappointing 2024, in which both teams lost their quarterbacks for extended periods due to injury, ultimately costing them a playoff spot, they will be looking to make a run back to the postseason.

The offseason for both squads has been relatively quiet, despite incessant murmurings of multiple trade rumors. However, even with the majority of their roster locked in, one analyst believes either of the two teams could use some help in the form of one of the best available free agents still on the market.

Can the Miami Dolphins or the Dallas Cowboys Win the Jaire Alexander Sweepstakes?

Jaire Alexander has regularly been one of the most elite corners in the league. Since stepping into the Green Bay Packers locker room in 2018, he’s made two Pro Bowl and All-Pro appearances apiece. However, his tenure with the squad came to an end this offseason.

After months of trying to find a potential trade partner, the Packers eventually bit the bullet and cut ties with him. Despite his abundant talent, the clear hurdle with the dynamic playmaker was the injury concern.

After starting off his career relatively healthy, the injury bug took hold of Alexander. In three of the last four seasons, he’s played in seven or fewer games, making his availability a major question mark for any organization.

However, Moe Moton of Bleacher Report, who ranked Alexander as the best remaining unsigned free agent in the NFL, has Miami and Dallas as two teams that could benefit from adding the ballhawk to their roster.

The Case for the Dolphins

Over the last couple of seasons, Miami has been steadily improving on the defensive end, rising from 17th in 2022 to 11th in 2024 on PFSN’s Defense+ metric. However, with a plethora of weapons already secure on the offensive end, their focus in the offseason was once again on the defensive unit.

However, the cornerback position suffered a big loss in the form of Kendall Fuller, with fifth-round pick Jason Marshall Jr. serving as the only realistic replacement. As a result, some help on that end might help Miami in a major way.

They’ve added a bunch of talent to their defensive line and at the safety position, including Michigan standout Kenneth Grant and veterans Ifeatu Melifonwu and Ashtyn Davis. But with the corner position needing some work, Alexander could be an option.

The injury concern is going to be a point of concern for Miami as well. But the team is desperate enough, after giving out massive-scale extensions to Tua Tagovailoa, Tyreek Hill, and Jayden Waddle, to build a contending team.

Alexander offers them the most clear-cut path to that goal.

The Case for the Cowboys

With injuries running roughshod over the roster, the Dallas Cowboys defense was far from its elite self of the last few years. In 2024, they ranked 25th on PFSN’s Defense+ metric, behind teams like the Las Vegas Raiders and the New York Giants.

In particular, their corners suffered majorly, with their starting duo of Trevon Diggs and DaRon Bland just playing one game together. Owner and general manager Jerry Jones looked to switch things up in the summer, letting Jourdan Lewis walk before adding East Carolina stud Shavon Revel Jr. in the 2025 NFL Draft.

However, even with those three, Moton argues that the Cowboys could use help in the form of the former Green Bay Packers star, especially on a “one-year prove-it deal.” The case is simple, especially with Diggs slated to miss the start of the year.

“If healthy, Alexander could start alongside DaRon Bland while Diggs recovers from knee surgery,” Moton wrote. “Rookie third-rounder Shavon Revel Jr. is working his way back from a torn ACL.”

Dallas has to hope that their entire core of elite corners, albeit each with injury concerns, can string together a full season’s worth of competent defense in the secondary. It sounds desperate, sure, but that is the state the Cowboys find themselves in.

The Outside Case for the Baltimore Ravens or the Philadelphia Eagles

For the Ravens, help in the secondary is a must. After allowing the second-most passing yards in the league last season, any upgrade would be a blessing for Baltimore. Marlon Humphrey and Nate Wiggins can hold the position down, but the team is lagging behind the two of them.

If they can add Alexander to the mix, it allows Humphrey to be in his natural environment in the slot.

On the other hand, the Eagles were an elite unit last season, allowing the least amount of passing yards per game. But with Darius Slay and Isaiah Rodgers moving on to new teams this summer, it leaves room for a veteran to take over.

Both Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell, after excellent rookie seasons, are likely going to man the position for the future. However, as presently constructed, Philadelphia could add some veteran help, a Howie Roseman classic.

As one of the best corners in the league, Alexander is going to have a ton of potential suitors. Each one makes sense, in one way or another. But which jersey will be on the former first-round pick’s back when Week 1 of the 2025 NFL season rolls around?
