Cowboys Defensive Coordinator Position: NFL Insider’s Surprising Report Claims Rex Ryan Is Still an Option

The Cowboys were thought to be adding Mike Zimmer to be their DC. However, it isn't finalized yet, and some believe Rex Ryan may still be in play.

It’s never easy when it comes to the Dallas Cowboys. In what was thought to be a foregone conclusion that Mike Zimmer was joining the team to be their new defensive coordinator, has become less of a sure thing a day after the Super Bowl.

The departure of Dan Quinn to the Washington Commanders left a hole on the Cowboys’ staff that was thought to be filled by Zimmer. However, the latest reports from NFL insiders allude to the fact that it may not be a done deal just yet with ESPN analyst and former NFL head coach Rex Ryan still in play to be hired.

UPDATE: According to NFL insiders, the Cowboys have officially added Mike Zimmer to be their new defensive coordinator.

Report Claims Rex Ryan Is Still an Option for Cowboys

The old saying is that the “Cowboys will always be the Cowboys,” and when it comes to dominating the news cycles, there is no team better.

Just yesterday, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported that Zimmer and the team were expected to pair up, and that the move was going to be official soon.

However, on the same broadcast, just moments later, Ryan refuted the report and stated he doesn’t believe that to be fact.

Almost 24 hours later, Schefter joined the Pat McAfee Show and provided further context to the situation and added validity to what Ryan was saying yesterday.

“The Dallas Cowboys loved Rex Ryan..Mike Zimmer’s deal isn’t done yet and they’ve reached back out to Rex Ryan”

Ultimately, the Cowboys could still decide to add Zimmer like originally reported, but it looks as if Schefter is at least willing to concede that it isn’t as concrete as they once thought it was. In large part due to the fact that Ryan impressed them in his visit.

It could be a public contract dispute tactic, or it could be a real internal struggle with the powers that be within the Cowboys’ walls as they look to make the right decision going into the future.

Jerry Jones himself spoke to us here at Pro Football Network ahead of the NFL Honors last Thursday night and was complimentary of Ryan following their meeting.

“Rex Ryan, yes, was interviewed two days ago, absolutely is, absolutely is,” when asked about Ryan and him being a possible candidate for the job.

“He’s an outstanding coach…he’ll bring about as much football knowledge and about as much passion as you could put out there.”

Maybe the Cowboys still end up going with Zimmer after all, but as we sit here on Monday following the Super Bowl, Ryan looks to have made an impression on Dallas enough to at least put a pause on anything official there just yet.
