After being named the 2023 NFL Assistant Coach of the Year following his first season as the Cleveland Browns‘ defensive coordinator, Jim Schwartz will be in the spotlight as he looks to build on the team’s momentum this season.
With over 30 years of coaching experience, Schwartz has helped the Browns become an elite defense that puts pressure on opposing quarterbacks. His defensive strategy includes a mix of pre-snap deception and various types of looks throughout the season.
Everything You Need To Know About Cleveland Browns Defensive Coordinator Jim Schwartz
Schwartz graduated with a degree in economics from Georgetown University, where he played linebacker. He started his NFL coaching career as a researcher for Bill Belichick in the early-to-mid-1990s with the Browns and later moved on to his first defensive coordinator gig with the Tennessee Titans from 2001 to 2007.
In 2009, Schwartz bagged his first head coaching stint with the Detroit Lions but struggled to execute his winning potential. During his five-year tenure with the team, the Lions only mustered one winning season, going 10-6 with a Wild Card round elimination vs. the New Orleans Saints in 2011.
Once Detroit let him go, the Buffalo Bills hired Schwartz as their new defensive coordinator in January 2014. Under his guidance, the Bills had one of the best defenses that year, ending the season with a 9-7 record and fourth in the NFL overall in least opponent points and yards allowed in each game.
Schwartz also led his defensive linemen Mario Williams, Marcell Dareus, and Kyle Williams to the Pro Bowl. However, when coach Rex Ryan took over in Buffalo, he decided not to retain Schwartz and brought his own staff to the team.
After a few pit stops with the Philadelphia Eagles and two seasons back in Tennessee, Schwartz returned to the Browns after 30 years and had an electric first go-round as their defensive coordinator.
Schwartz is married to Kathy Schwartz, a fellow Maryland native. They have three children together. Their twins, Christian and Allison, were born in 2001, and later the couple had another daughter, Maria.
How Long Has Schwartz Been the Browns’ Defensive Coordinator?
Schwartz joined the team in 2023 and will enter his second year with similar expectations and better results than last season.Â
Regarding his plans for 2024, Schwartz said the Browns are in a better spot than last year as they now have a full season of experience.
He also noted that the team has more room for changes this year, which can help them work on things that troubled them last year (like their zone coverage) and eventually win more games.
Who Was the Defensive Coordinator Before Jim Schwartz?
Schwartz replaced Joe Woods in Cleveland. Woods was appointed the team’s defensive coordinator in 2020 and stayed for three years.
After firing Woods — who was among Kevin Stefanski’s first few hires when he joined the Browns — he bid farewell to the former Browns DC by thanking Woods for his hard work, saying that he had the “utmost respect” for him as a coach and person.
After getting fired by the Browns, the New Orleans Saints hired Woods as their DC on Feb. 6, 2023.
