Should You Start Chuba Hubbard or Miles Sanders in Fantasy Football in Week 13?

Which of the Carolina Panthers RBs -- Chuba Hubbard or Miles Sanders -- should be in your fantasy football lineup in Week 13?

In pretty much every area this season, things haven’t gone well for the Carolina Panthers. The team fired coach Frank Reich after the 1-10 start, despite this being only his first season.

The rushing game has also been up and down, but let’s take a look if you should start either Miles Sanders or Chuba Hubbard in your fantasy football lineup this week.

Should You Start Chuba Hubbard or Miles Sanders This Week?

In the Pro Football Network Start/Sit Optimizer, our Consensus Rankings say that Hubbard is the player to start. His projected 8.9 points include 42 rushing yards and two receptions for 20 receiving yards. That projected stat line narrowly outperforms the consensus projection for Sanders (7.7 points).

Hubbard has been the more consistent running back this year, and he is coming off his best game of the season.

Fantasy Outlook for Hubbard This Week

The offense still struggled last week in the loss to the Tennessee Titans. The Panthers were able to only score 10 points in the game and couldn’t muster anything up on the offensive side of the ball. Despite that, Hubbard certainly was a bright star in that game. Hubbard finished with a season-high 92 scrimmage yards and scored the only touchdown of the game for Carolina.

In the previous game against the Cowboys, he ran the ball 10 times for 57 yards. The Panthers have been down in their games this year, which has played a role in their rushing frequency.

The Panthers rank 28th in rushing, and they rank 27th in rushing attempts. You would think that, with a rookie quarterback without big-time weapons on the outside, they might look to run the ball a little bit more.

Carolina ranks 28th in yards per carry (3.8), and it is tied for the fewest rushing touchdowns in the NFL with just three (with the Denver Broncos and New York Jets).

It hasn’t been a debate between the two running backs this season, Hubbard has been the more consistent option. Not very many people would have thought that after the year Sanders had last season in Philadelphia.

Fantasy Outlook for Sanders This Week

Sanders had more carries than Hubbard last week. That isn’t a huge surprise as that has happened a lot this year, but he carried the ball 15 times for only 28 yards. He also didn’t contribute in the passing game, as he finished with zero catches.

Despite getting the ball more on the ground over the past two weeks (26 carries to 24 for Hubbard), Sanders has been outgained 92 to 78.

Sanders hasn’t been on the field for 50+% of the Panthers offensive snaps since Week 3. The fact that Hubbard has been on the field more often shows the Panthers may also trust him more in pass protection and situational matters.

This does feel like it could be a week-to-week situation where the Panthers divide the carries between the two, but Hubbard has just been the more effective running back this season.
