Former Dolphins DT Christian Wilkins Opens Up on Tua Tagovailoa – ‘We Kinda Had Similar Stories’

After spending four years as his teammate, Christian Wilkins shared an honest assessment on Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa.

The Miami Dolphins have had an up-and-down offseason. They’ve added talent in free agency but also lost key starters from last season.

One of the most notable names not returning from last season is defensive tackle Christian Wilkins, who signed with the Las Vegas Raiders. On a podcast appearance, Wilkins opened up about Tua Tagovailoa and gave his assessment on the Dolphins’ starting quarterback.

After five seasons in Miami, Wilkins will be playing for a new team this season after signing a four-year, $110 million deal in free agency with the Raiders.

While Tagovailoa is no longer his teammate, Wilkins spoke highly of the Dolphins’ quarterback on Arik Armstead’s podcast, Third and Long.

“I really had a front-row seat to Tua and his growth and his development as a player, and just as a teammate, a leader, all that,” said Wilkins. “It’s been cool to watch. I feel like, in a way, we kinda had similar stories.”

In bringing the conversation up, Armstead mentioned Tagovailoa being lumped in as a “system quarterback” by Cam Newton earlier in the year, which was something that was under heavy scrutiny. Yet, he wanted Wilkins’ opinion, who has been around Tagovailoa his entire career.

“He went through his stuff, had his struggles early. But now, you know, Pro Bowl, MVP finalist and all that … I don’t care what system, what scheme, or anything like that, you’re still playing,” said Wilkins.

Tagovailoa came into the NFL in 2020, one year after Wilkins did in 2019. Wilkins was a first-round pick out of Clemson, having been a two-time CFP National Champion, and faced Tagovailoa in college.

“So, definitely shout out to him, just the things he’s been able to do and accomplish,” said Wilkins. “It was just cool to have a front-row seat to watching his development as a player.”

In five seasons with the Dolphins, Wilkins had 355 tackles, 20.5 sacks, and one interception. He had a career year in 2023, totaling 65 tackles and nine sacks.

Tagovailoa, on the other hand, is still looking for a new contract with the Dolphins. At 26 years old, he will play on the $23.1 million guaranteed fifth-year option but is set to be an unrestricted free agent in 2025.
