The Kansas City Chiefs are signing former Green Bay Packers wide receiver Marquez Valdes-Scantling to a three-year, $30 million deal with an $18 million payout in the first two years and a maximum value of $36 million, according to his agency, NSA Football.
Marquez Valdes-Scantling signing with Kansas City Chiefs
Valdes-Scantling had strong interest from the Packers and multiple NFL teams while he met with the Chiefs. The Chiefs needed a deep threat at wide receiver after trading Tyreek Hill to the Miami Dolphins.
The Packers obviously need help at wide receiver after sending Davante Adams to the Las Vegas Raiders. Adams signed a five-year deal that averages $28.5 million annually with $67.5 million fully guaranteed to remain in Las Vegas long term. Because of Adams and Valdes-Scantling’s departure, the Packers are in flux at the position.
Heavy interest around the NFL
Valdes-Scantling drew interest from the Raiders, Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts, Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Chiefs, and San Francisco 49ers. The Jaguars were also interested in Valdes-Scantling before signing Christian Kirk to a monster deal.
Kirk signed a four-year, $72 million ($18 million annually) contract with a maximum value of $84 million, per a league source. While Valdes-Scantling wasn’t as expensive, he still did well in free agency as one of the top remaining options on the marketplace.
Valdes-Scantling has caught 123 career passes for 2,153 yards and 13 touchdowns. He caught 26 passes for 430 yards and 3 touchdowns in 11 games with seven starts last season. In 2020, he reeled in a career-high 6 touchdowns on 33 receptions for a career-high 690 yards and a 20.9 average per catch.
