Patrick Mahomes has become a harbinger of good fate for the Kansas City Chiefs since he became their starter in 2018.
While his polished skills have helped him scale new heights, the former Texas Tech Red Raider is known for his competitive spirit.
A lot of credit goes to the tight-knit KC clan, who support Mahomes and know him in and out. Not surprisingly, that includes a tell.
The Chiefs are aware that Mahomes has a way of communicating that he is in the zone when competing, one that even the quarterback isn’t aware of.
In a recent revelation, Andy Reid and Travis Kelce imitated a hand gesture by Mahomes that tells the team about his mood.
”Yeah, so this,” said Reid in a video uploaded by Coach Dan Casey via Instagram, where the Chiefs head coach reveals that it’s almost an involuntary act for Mahomes.
”When he gets in his super-competitive mode, he’s locked in because it’s almost like he’s doing this [does the hand gesture],” Kelce added.
Once a college star pitcher, a top passer in college, and now a three-time Super Bowl champion, Mahomes has his unique ways.
Along with his tell, the 28-year-old QB holds many secrets close to his heart when it comes to football.

A well-kept secret for a long time is red underwear that Mahomes wears as a lucky charm. Initially a gift from his wife, Brittany Mahomes, the piece of clothing is now his superstitious choice, especially if the Chiefs are going through a hot streak.
“I mean, if we’re on a hot streak, I can’t wash it,” joked Mahomes on one of the “ManningCast” episodes.
He further revealed, “I got to just keep it rolling. So, you know, as long as I’m winning football games. I’ll keep the superstition going.”

Back in 2023, his favorite teammate and best friend, Kelce, revealed that the two-time MVP is as nerdy as they come.
On an episode of the “New Heights” podcast in October 2023, the tight end narrated how the duo attended a game of volleyball where Mahomes was lost for a while. He finally found him in his car, going through a binder full of scribbled notes.
And that’s when Kelce thought to himself, “I was just like, man, this guy’s studious as f**k.”
In addition, Mahomes uses several techniques for maintaining his mental health, including meditation. His love of Doritos and Jolly Rancher candies is well-known, too.
