Where Do Texas A&M and Texas Stand Heading Into Week 14?

Initially ranked No. 19 in the AP Preseason top 25, Texas A&M gradually climbed and peaked at the No. 3 spot in Week 8. The Aggies kept their place for the next five weeks and have a 100% chance of making the college football playoffs, per the PFSN CFB Playoff Meter.

The Mike Elko-coached squad has emerged victorious in pressure-packed situations, winning closely-fought games over Notre Dame (41-40), Auburn (16-10), Arkansas (45-42), and South Carolina (31-30), and overwhelmed top 25 teams LSU (49-25) and Missouri (38-17).

In their last outing, the Aggies overwhelmed Samford 48-0, with quarterback Marcel Reed throwing for 120 yards and three touchdowns and Amari Daniels rushing for 106 yards and a TD. Texas A&M blew the game wide open as early as the second quarter, forcing Elko to use his backup quarterbacks to close out the game.

This season, Reed has completed 61.8% of his passes for 2,752 yards with 25 touchdowns. The sophomore signal-caller also has 395 rushing yards and six rushing TDs, tying him with Le’Veon Moss for team-high honors.

Rueben Owens is the team’s top rusher with 570 yards and five TDs, while Moss has accumulated 389 yards. On the receiving side, KC Concepcion and Mario Craver have been the 1-2 punch for the Aggies, combining for 1,610 yards and 13 TDs. Additionally, Ashton Bethel-Roman is third in team reception yards with 442 yards and five scores.

On the defensive side, Cashius Howell has been the anchor of Texas A&M’s pass rush, recording 11.5 sacks and 80 yards lost. Taurean York and Marcus Ratcliffe lead the team in tackles with 56 and 55, respectively. At the same time, Daymion Sanford, Will Lee III, Dalton Brooks, and Tyler Onyedim have racked up at least 40 tackles this season.

Meanwhile, Texas has had mixed results against ranked opponents. Arch Manning and the Longhorns are 2-2 this season against top 25 teams. They beat Week 7 No. 6 Oklahoma (23-6) and Week 10 No. 9 Vanderbilt (34-31). They lost to the current No. 1 Ohio State in the first week, 14-7, and to Week 12 No. 5 Georgia (35-10).

Coached by Steve Sarkisian, the team aims to finish the regular season on a high note as bowl games approach. Arch Manning enters Week 14 with a PFSN QBI Impact Score of 84.8 and a solid B grade. He has accumulated 2,763 passing yards, completed 62.5% of his throws, tossed 23 touchdowns, and registered seven interceptions.

The sophomore signal-caller has rushed for seven TDs to lead the Longhorns. Quintrevion Wisner has run for 442 yards and scored three TDs. Wide receivers Ryan Wingo, DeAndre Moore, and Parker Livingstone have combined for 16 touchdowns and 1,736 receiving yards. Manning relies on these top wideouts when aiming for an air raid.

On the defensive side, Anthony Hill Jr (70 tackles), Michael Taaffe (65), and Jelani McDonald (64) have racked up 60 or more tackles for the Longhorns this season. Linebacker Colin Simmons has recorded 10 sacks, while Hill has come up with four.

In his last game against Arkansas, the nephew of Super Bowl-winning signal-callers Peyton and Eli Manning passed for 389 yards. He scored four TDs to lead Texas to a 52-37 win over the Razorbacks. Moore caught Manning’s 3 TD passes while Livingstone caught for 104 yards, including a 54-yard bomb sent by the quarterback.

Manning also produced receiving and rushing touchdowns to become the first Longhorn quarterback to record a passing, rushing, and receiving touchdown in a single game since Bobby Layne achieved the feat against Missouri in the Cotton Bowl Classic on Jan. 1, 1946.

Texas leads the all-time series against Texas A&M 77-37-5. A Longhorns victory would spoil the Aggies’ chances of sweeping the regular season. On the other hand, a convincing victory by Texas A&M over Texas would erase any doubts about its amazing campaign this season.
