One CFB insider Asserts Ole Miss HC Lane Kiffin Should Avoid NY Giants Job

With the College Football Playoff within reach, Kiffin is now highly sought after by programs interested in raising their profiles, including Florida, Auburn, LSU, and Penn State. While he appears focused on guiding Ole Miss to the CFP, external interest continues to mount.

ESPN analyst and former UConn quarterback Dan Orlovsky discussed on “The Next Round” podcast whether Kiffin should pursue a possible offer from the New York Giants, highlighting a current debate about Kiffin’s next career step. The conversation centered on whether the Giants’ head coaching vacancy represents a smart move for the Ole Miss coach.

“I think very highly of Lane Kiffin and believe he has proven himself as a strong coach both schematically and in leadership,” Orlovsky said. “He is thriving in college football. However, I do not see a fit in this situation. Making a decision solely for a quarterback is risky. It might benefit Jackson Dart, but is it the best move for the New York Giants? Additionally, would Lane want to leave Ole Miss for a franchise that has had six head coaches in nine years?”

For three seasons, Dart started for the Rebels, passing for 10,617 yards and 72 touchdowns while winning 29 of 39 games under Kiffin. The Giants drafted him 25th overall in the 2025 NFL Draft. The idea of Kiffin leaving the college ranks and joining the Giants centers on his past work with Dart, a premise Orlovsky dismissed as too narrow a foundation for such a significant career move.

Beyond the questionable connection to Dart, Orlovsky noted Kiffin’s prior experience as an NFL head coach. Kiffin led the Oakland Raiders for 20 games from 2007 to 2008, finishing with a 5-15 record. Owner Al Davis fired him for conduct detrimental to the team, and a grievance followed over the termination.

An arbitrator ultimately agreed Davis acted with cause to fire Kiffin. Orlovsky pointed out that the NFL’s volatility is not ideal for coaches seeking to build long-term plans. Meanwhile, college coaching offers greater stability with lucrative buyouts serving as a financial safety net.

Before considering any major job changes, Kiffin and the Rebels are currently pursuing a playoff run, with a 94% chance of advancing according to the PFSN CFB Playoff Meter. Despite outside speculation swirling around his future, Kiffin’s primary focus remains on the team’s immediate goals rather than on potential future job offers in either college or professional football.
