Cardinals Trading Back? NFL Reporter Opens Possibility of History Being Made With 2024 Draft Class

The NFL has never had four quarterbacks selected with the first four picks in the NFL Draft. Could the 2024 class make history?

On many 2024 NFL Draft boards, most mocks have the Arizona Cardinals taking Ohio State phenom Marvin Harrison Jr.

That might not be the case, though.

According to The Athletic’s NFL reporter Dianna Russini, “Some in the league believe they [the Cardinals] are open to trading back” from the fourth spot. If that were to happen, the expectation would be that a team would be trading up into the top-five overall picks to select a quarterback.

Is it likely that we could see four quarterbacks kick off the 2024 NFL Draft?

The Latest From NFL Combine, Quarterback Class

Russini, in her latest news and notes from the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, made it clear that some executives believe the current quarterback draft class is worth trading up for, even if it meant trading into the top five.

The real question, should that happen, is which quarterback are people moving up for?

While the top three quarterbacks are set with USC’s Caleb Williams, North Carolina’s Drake Maye, and LSU’s Jayden Daniels, other players like Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy have had a strong support base from those in NFL circles. McCarthy, in particular, has had plenty of people speaking out their support for his potential and youthfulness to organizations.

“Talking to some personnel people, they think McCarthy is going top five,” ESPN’s Louis Riddick said.

Riddick’s comments have been supported by other national reporters like Ben Allbright who has doubled down by saying, “The NFL is MUCH higher on J.J. McCarthy (top 10 pick) than they are on Bo Nix or Michael Penix Jr.”

The NFL has never had four quarterbacks taken within the first four selections of a draft. The 2024 class might make history based on the latest conversations.

The Ripple Effect Elsewhere

The current NFL Draft class at quarterback is expected to be a strong one in 2024, but it’s not the only dominant class this draft cycle. Top performers at wide receiver, tackle, and even cornerback make the draft class as a whole one of the more talented groups in recent memory.

Should four quarterbacks go in the top four overall picks, there will be a large ripple effect throughout the rest of the draft.

To start, receivers like Harrison, Rome Odunze, and Malik Nabers could go quickly after, pushing top tackles like Joe Alt and Olu Fashanu further down the top 10. It would also push the cornerback class of Quinyon Mitchell, Terrion Arnold, and others well into the teens instead of borderline top-10 selections.

Furthermore, if a team is willing to trade up for a quarterback, other trades could be affected by the kind of market that the original deal brings.

As with any draft, where quarterbacks end up being selected affects other prospects around them. That could be the case in the 2024 class more than any other, especially if history is made within the first four selections.
