The New Orleans Saints are stuck in a bit of a no man’s land right now. Derek Carr’s retirement gave them some much-needed salary cap relief, but it also left them without a clear answer at quarterback.
With three quarterbacks, all unproven and on rookie deals, on the roster, the Saints don’t have a clear-cut answer to who their starting quarterback is going to be. However, a former MVP turned analyst believes the answer to New Orleans’ problems is not currently on their squad.
Cam Newton Believes Aaron Rodgers Is New Orleans Saints Savior
Cam Newton was one of the most hyped prospects coming out of college. Entering the NFL, he immediately proved his worth by taking the Carolina Panthers to some of their most sustained success throughout the franchise’s history.
An MVP and a trip to the Super Bowl all became a reality under Newton. Since his retirement, he’s become a regular analyst, appearing on ESPN and even hosting his own podcast, 4th & 1 With Cam Newton.
On the show, he argued about the Saints’ current quarterback situation. They have Jake Haener, Spencer Rattler, Tyler Shough, and the recently signed Hunter Dekkers in their room.
When asked to choose between trying to trade for Kirk Cousins from the Atlanta Falcons or adding Aaron Rodgers through free agency, he believed the answer was crystal clear. First, though, he broke down why the Cousins’ move wasn’t the right one.
“I just don’t think Kirk Cousins has it in him to lead a team to the playoffs. That’s just me, personally. I think Kirk Cousins is as talented as a safety value that any team would want to have. But to lead them to the playoffs? Nah.”
Instead, he believes it might be the perfect situation for a certain former four-time MVP. “It was highly favored for him to go to Pittsburgh. But Aaron Rodgers in New Orleans with a controlled environment that is a toxic, winning environment for the most part.”
He believes that for someone on the other side of 40, it is the ideal solution. “In a dome? [Whistles]. You ain’t got to worry about snow, wind, rain.”
After the immensely high expectations that came with Rodgers’ signing with the New York Jets, the respite with the Saints might be an easier way to end a storybook career.
However, the allure of a potential deep playoff run alongside the excellence of Mike Tomlin and the Steelers might be too hard for the former NFL champion to pass up.
