The Denver Broncos have to be one of the happiest teams coming out of the 2024 season. After getting out of the Russell Wilson business, their rookie quarterback, Bo Nix, had an excellent first season, breaking their nearly decade-long playoff drought.
With a top-tier defense, their offseason went as well as one could have imagined. Addressing every area of need while strengthening their defensive unit, Denver appears poised for a breakout 2025 campaign. However, one analyst believes they could look for an insurance policy alongside Nix on offense.
Denver Broncos Could Target Veteran Help for Bo Nix
Last season, Denver had a middling offense, finishing dead in the middle at 16th on PFSN’s Offense+ metric. But rather than the rookie quarterback, it was the ground game that was far from excellent for the Mile High City.
Finishing 23rd in rushing touchdowns with just 12 and having no running back tally more than 600 yards on the year, made their offense all too predictable and reliant on Nix. While his work was admirable, diversifying the offense was a necessity.
The addition of Evan Engram to take on the “Joker” role Sean Payton has been preaching was a verifiable knock-out. During the 2025 NFL Draft, though, they targeted a true upgrade at running back in the form of RJ Harvey out of UCF.
Totaling close to 3,000 yards in his final two years at college, Harvey added 38 touchdowns, while averaging close to 6.6 yards per carry. If his numbers translate to the pros, then the Broncos don’t have much to worry about.
However, Brandon Austin of PFSN believes the team should target J.K. Dobbins out of the remaining free agents, calling it “wise to add a veteran.” A second-round draft pick himself, Dobbins’ time in the NFL has been marred by injuries.
Between the Baltimore Ravens and the Los Angeles Chargers, the Ohio State alum has appeared in just 37 total games, tallying 22 total touchdowns and 2,252 rushing yards during that period.
But, the upside is hard to ignore, especially for a team that has the requisite cap space to take a chance on him, for the right price.

“The league’s growing reliance on committee backfields could work in his favor. Dobbins owns a career average of 5.2 yards per carry over 429 attempts, which suggests there’s still value to be unlocked, especially for a back who’s only 26 years old.”
The league-leading defense received additional upgrades in the offseason, courtesy of proven names like Talanoa Hufanga and Dre Greenlaw. But the offense remains a work in progress, and taking a gamble on Dobbins might be in Denver’s best interest.
