After ending Alexandra Eala’s Cinderella run of a teenage wildcard with a 7-6(3), 5-7, 6-3 victory in the Miami Open semifinal on Friday, Jessica Pegula deviated to talking about football. Or more particularly, seized the opportunity to throw shade at an NFL team.
Terry Pegula owns the NFL’s Buffalo Bills, NHL’s Buffalo Sabres, AHL’s Rochester Americans, and Buffalo Bandits and Rochester Knightawks of the National Lacrosse League.
Jessica Pegula, daughter of Terry, is continuing the longstanding Bills-Dolphins rivalry.

Making it to the finals was an accomplishment Pegula would cherish throughout her lifetime. Of course, because she made it to the finals three times in a row. But more importantly, because she scored her win in the Dolphins Stadium.
In her post-game interview, she made clear to the whole world.
“Yeah thank you guys so much for coming out. I love playing here, I love playing home. I love getting wins in the Dolphins’ Stadium,” the Miami Open finalist said, making the whole stadium erupt in laughter and cheers.
“I always play really well here, I really do. And you guys always come out here to support me so much. It’s my third semifinal in a row, I think. So I’m hoping 3rd time is a charm. I wanna make it to that final so bad. So I’ll give it another shot tomorrow night,” she continued, hoping to win the 2024 U.S. Open Final rematch.

Pegula will face the No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday in the Miami Open’s women’s finals. When the two collided earlier in the 2024 finals, Sabalenka took home the trophy. Fair to say this would be Pegula’s chance to revenge.
It will be interesting to whether she has to say anything about the Dolphins if she wins the Miami Open. The shot should hurt the Dolphins properly, given the times they have lost to the Bills in the NFL.
Ever since the Pegulas purchased the franchise in October 2014, the Bills have a 17-5 record against the Dolphins; 7-4 in Miami. The Bills have also defeated Miami in 13 of their last 14 games including playoffs.
Notably, the Bills have won five straight AFC East titles, backing their dominance since it is not just limited to against Miami. Pegula’s barb should be enough to fuel the Dolphins to win their next faceoff.
