Blazers Insider Reveals the Wild Behind-the-Scenes Drama Behind Portland’s Decision To Buy Out Deandre Ayton

After just two rocky seasons, the Trail Blazers bought out Deandre Ayton’s contract. Culture, effort, and off-court issues made the split inevitable.

The Portland Trail Blazers finally managed to cut ties with Deandre Ayton after just two seasons. They sent shockwaves across the NBA landscape after agreeing to the buyout, freeing him to sign with another contender.

While the move surprised the league, many factors made this move inevitable.

Cultural Fit, Commitment Issues, And More — The Deandre Ayton Story

Last season, Ayton averaged respectable numbers, with 14.4 points and 10.2 rebounds. Yet it went down as one of the least productive seasons of his career, marred by many inconsistencies. Reporters suggested that his efforts were “reluctant” at times, with whispers going around about a lack of motivation in him to lead the team.

If the league chatter is to be believed, Ayton did not quite meld nicely with the Blazers’ culture. NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins even went ahead to call him a “diva” and a “cancer in the locker room.” Comments like these led to a rise in concerns about his ability to thrive in high-pressure situations. No matter how blunt, it only goes to reflect why Portland decided to cut ties with him.

The Trail Blazers managed to put up with him in the beginning as he underperformed, missing shots, dealing with injuries, and falling short of his potential. They understood that he came to a new place and would need time to adjust. Now, they no longer want to put up with his antics.

His tardiness, skipping of rehab programs, and slamming chairs only added fuel to the fire. Just like the Phoenix Suns, Portland decided that the “Ayton baggage” was too heavy to carry.

Sure, Ayton had his set of problems, but was it only his fault?

Is Deandre Ayton Really Guilty of the Mess in Portland?

Beyond this, Ayton also encountered many unexpected challenges in Portland. One notable incident involves an air mattress. He revealed that adjusting to a new city kept him sleeping on makeshift bedding for weeks, impairing his health and performance.
He told The Oregonian, “I didn’t have a bed for quite some time… just trying to figure this out,” commenting on the strain it caused.

All he had to do was order a bed or a mattress to sleep on. He must have had the finances to pay for it. But then again, consistency hasn’t been his hallmark.

Then, sometime after this bizarre incident, he grabbed headlines once again for missing a game against the Brooklyn Nets, not because of an injury, but because of ice.

Yes! A sheet of ice blocked his driveway. Reportedly, he spent hours trying to get through it, clearing it all up before giving up. Portland even sent some staff to help him out in this situation, but they could not. With the team calling his status “not with team,” the incident sparked ridicule, raising concerns about his readiness.

Ayton’s adjustments eventually started to bleed into the team dynamics. Questions started rising about his professionalism, especially for someone who is on a $133 million contract.

Portland truly believes in one motto: You can have bad plays, but not bad ways. This hangs in the office of Chauncey Billups in bold letters. So, it comes as no surprise that they decided to cut ties with Ayton because his excuses were only reinforcing the negative narrative against him.

Now a free agent, he’s expected to draw interest from contenders like the Los Angeles Lakers or the Milwaukee Bucks, who have competitive aspirations and strong veteran leadership.
