Just as things were finally starting to look up for the Dallas Mavericks, the offseason might be very unfortunate for the franchise. After the disastrous Luka Dončić trade in February, the team’s rationale didn’t add up, and their plan fell apart very quickly.
Both Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving got injured, and a majority of the roster followed suit. However, an extremely lucky day at the draft lottery netted them generational prospect Cooper Flagg with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. However, the team’s coaching staff might be wafer-thin in the coming weeks, as two more assistants might move.

Dallas Mavericks’ Coaching Staff Faces Uncertainty Amid Offseason Shakeup
After losing assistant coach San Sweeney to the San Antonio Spurs, two more names from head coach Jason Kidd’s coaching tree might be on the move: assistant coaches Jared Dudley and God Shammgod.
ESPN’s Marc Stein broke down the rumors on his podcast, “The Stein Line,” on Friday, June 27. For Dudley, who was part of the 2020 Los Angeles Lakers championship squad, the list of interested teams continues to grow.
The Memphis Grizzlies’ pursuit has seen teams like the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Denver Nuggets join the race.
“League sources say that the Nuggets have joined Memphis and Cleveland in pursuit of Dudley, who is currently the No. 3 assistant in Dallas on Jason Kidd’s staff,” reported Stein.
However, the problems don’t end there for the Mavericks. Stein added: “Orlando [Magic], meanwhile, continues to try to put on a full-court press to hire God Shammgod away from the Mavericks as well.”
As the lead assistant, heavily emphasizing player development, Shammgod is one of the most revered figures on the sidelines and shares a close relationship with superstar point guard Irving.
However, Stein isn’t the only one following this train of thought. The two coaches share an agent, Andy Miller, who revealed where things stood between Dudley, Shammgod and the Dallas front office during an interview with SiriusXM’s NBA division.
“The only way that Jared Dudley would be given permission to leave would be if it were an opportunity to improve his position,” said Miller.

However, on the Shammgod side of things, the situation was a little different. After a nine-year stint with Dallas that Miller described as “one of the better things that’s happened to him,” he believes a change could be in order. The veteran voice is looking for a different location and a change of voice to refresh his career.
Additionally, ESPN’s lead NBA insider, Brian Windhorst, spoke about the developing situation on “The Hoop Collective” podcast. From his perspective, the moves seem to be as good as done.
“The lead assistant left,” Windhorst said, referring to Alex Jensen’s departure at the end of this season. “The secondary assistant, Jared Dudley, is reportedly leaving to join the Cavs, and the developmental assistant, God Shammgod, is reportedly considering leaving as well.”

But the three assistants leaving aren’t the only sign of worry for the Mavericks organization. After the New York Knicks surprisingly fired Tom Thibodeau earlier this month, the organization reportedly wanted Kidd to take over their head coaching job.
The shocking part was that Dallas’ current head coach reportedly had mutual interest in the move before the front office intervened. With three coaches leaving, and another interested in a different roster, the cracks in Dallas’ armour are becoming harder to ignore.
