No NBA draft is ever without its surprises, and one of the biggest shockers in the first round of the 2025 edition was the drop of Illinois Fighting Illini guard Kasparas Jakučionis.
Widely regarded as one of the most compelling offensive creators in the class, the 19-year-old was often projected to go in the top 10. It was not until the Miami Heat took a bet on him at 20th overall that he heard his name called.
Exploring the Potential Reasons Behind Kasparas Jakučionis’ Slide
Jakučionis stood out as one of the most creative passers in this draft class, consistently demonstrating elite vision through precise skip passes, exceptional accuracy in pick-and-roll scenarios, and an uncanny ability to hit cutters in stride. He lit up the stat sheet at Illinois, averaging 15.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game during the 2024-2025 season.
While there were no off-court concerns for Jakučionis, several scouts had raised concerns about his projection to the NBA. The biggest problem often cited was his 25.4% turnover rate, which highlighted his lack of ability to handle defensive pressure.
When forced to create out of isolation or navigate through traffic, his weaker burst, loose handle, and lack of east-to-west space creation influenced the high turnover rate. It is reasonable to think he could struggle even more in the NBA, considering he sometimes struggled to handle defensive pressure in college.
However, it is also worth noting that he was shouldering a significant offensive burden at Illinois, and the turnovers were often a result of his ambitious attempts to make high-level plays. Nonetheless, it is still a red flag and, with the class loaded with talent, 19 NBA teams preferred not to take a risk.

Another primary concern about Jakučionis stems from his defensive limitations. He was not able to generate many defensive events, and he averaged just 0.9 steals and 0.3 blocks per game, eventually decreasing his net impact on possession control. This lack of defensive prowess, especially his lateral quickness, is a concern for a guard in the NBA.
Jakučionis’ scoring ability in the midrange, coupled with his off-ball scalability, also raised some concerns. During the 2024-2025 season at Illinois, he landed just 31.8% of his three-point attempts, and he struggled with his catch-and-shoot threes, shooting just 31.4% on 105 attempts since 2023.
This lack of ability to finish off the ball could significantly hamper his role as a rotational creator. Jakučionis also needs to work on improving his free-throw percentage, which was 84.5% during his college career, but that was not a major concern behind his fall.
A Potential Steal for the Miami Heat
Still, getting selected at No. 20 is not too bad an outcome for Jakučionis. While he may not project as a long-term starter for the Heat, he can immediately start contributing minutes and help Miami fill the void at offensive creation left by Jimmy Butler’s departure earlier this year. Additionally, Miami’s defense significantly improved in the last season and can make up for Jakučionis’ limitations on that end.
Miami, known for its strong player development program, could be a perfect landing spot for the young guard. He will have the opportunity to refine his game, improve his decision-making with the ball, and develop his defensive skills under the tutelage of coach Erik Spoelstra and the Heat’s coaching staff.
This slide in the draft could ultimately be a blessing in disguise for Jakučionis, landing him in a situation where he can grow and thrive without the immediate pressure of being a top-10 pick.
